Question:
8 pound laptop...portable?
I was just wondering how many of you lug around a laptop thats 8 pounds or more on a day to day basis (like a college student). I'm purchasing a laptop soon and I've narrowed it down to a HP dv8000t but I'm not used to carrying around a n 8 pound laptop and i was just seeing if anyone does it regularly

well..my laptop is 6 pounds and it feels a little heavy.....so an 8 pounder will not be very portable.

With any accessories (if you carry power adapter, mouse, etc. around with you) and books, it might be heavy for you. It's all about personal preference though.
When I was in school I used to carry very heavy books around with me all day long. It wasn't pleasant, but you do what you have to do--right?
Some here suggest adding the expected weight to your normal load and carrying it around for a day or two to see if the added weight is too much to handle.
Keep in mind though that lightweight systems are like 5 lbs. and ultra lightweights are 2-3 lbs and very expensive. But for some users, the extra few lbs. is all the difference in the world. To me, an 8-pounder wouldn't be too much to handle (mine is 7).

You should probably consider waiting for the HP dv9000t, which is supposed to be the replacement for the dv8000. It's been announced, but not actually made available, oddly enough.

8LBS, just the notebook, In my opinion no. Like other posters said you have to factor in a cooling pad if you have one, a USB mouse, the little wieght of the bag, In my opinion no but others may think otherwise.

If you are indeed going to carry it around every day...it may be too heavy. If you are traveling it with maybe once a week, you should be able to manage.

If you have the right bag that is comfortable, be it a backpack or a messenger bag, that distributes the weight evenly a 10 or 12 lb notebook wouldn't be a chore to carry.

well I dont think its that heavy, my laptop is 6lbs and Ithink its really light... so it all depends on what you want, but I wouldnt go smaller then 15.4" if its my main computer...

try one out, go to any electronic store and ask to carry one around
anyway, unless ure pretty built or is really looking forward to back/shoulder pain in the future, 8 lb is not a reasonable idea
