Re: do i need a fan when buying labtop
Some people buy a laptop cooling pad, which is a pad that has fans built into it. They shoot air upwards from below the laptop and if you get a good match--it will blow air directly into the air intakes of your laptop.
You don't really need this unless you're buying a gaming laptop...and even then it's not a must.

Re: do i need a fan when buying labtop
Yea, completely agree, i only bought a targus cooling pad(so according to californa i should be dead) ... because i have an older laptop and its fans are slowly going... it overheats alot when i play counter strike for over 4 hours... so i got a cooling pad.. but for new laptops.. well its not even neccessary if you buy a laptop for gaming and its a gaming laptop you most likely will never need a fan because its used to being used heavily :D

Re: do i need a fan when buying labtop
Not strictly true. My laptop gets very hot when idle - after it was on for 4 hours and the processor had been on the lowest multiplier the CPU was 67C and the HD was 56C. Now that is hot!
Been using a cooler that sucks air from beneath my laptop and idle the temps are CPU 50C and HD 45C, gaming CPU 60C and HD 50C.

Re: do i need a fan when buying labtop
I would be pretty shocked if a laptop was designed that couldn;t work effectively without an external cooler. I could understand for older ones with dieing fans or if you lived in a really hot climate, but otherwise it's inexcusable.

Re: do i need a fan when buying labtop
The only laptop I would recommend getting a cooler for is a Macbook, or a Macbook Pro. Those are known to be hot stoves (not overheating, just darn hot).

They've also been known to overheat, although a lot of that seemed to be due to other issues (incorrectly applied thermal paste during assembly, or bits of plastic left over near the vent)
