Question:
[Netherlands]Laptop with +3 hr. working time
Hi all,
Since I'll be going to University after this summer I want to buy a laptop. I am confused by all the differtences between all those manufacturers. I hope you can help!
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
+/- 1100 €
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less - too expensive?
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen - I'd like this
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen - if I have to
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Office use, browsing the web, listening to music, incidental DVD. Nothing heavy.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Taking it everywhere; train, bus, college, campus, outside.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
No
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I don't really like Dell actually, but if you can convince me otherwise I don't mind. I heard brands like Acer aren't very solid in construction. Solid construction is what I need.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
more than three hours using office/listening music
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
no
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
I'll be buying my laptop in the Netherlands
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
I don't care, standard is easier to carry around I guess
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Everything larger than 1024*768
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
matte is easier to look at outside I guess. I'd love to sit outside with a laptop
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Hardly
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
This week?
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
Everything above 60 will do I guess
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD-CD/RW would be nice.
Additions:
I'd like a very solid construction of the laptop.

Re: [Netherlands]Laptop with +3 hr. working time
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V3205 is 12" with a Core Duo and quite affordable still (just under 1000€ here). I don't know if it's available there, though (at least in Germany it is). V3405 is basically the same with a 14" screen. A MacBook could fit into your budget too. The screens are glossy in these units though. HP nx6325 and nx6310 are quite robust laptops and thus probably a good choice if you want to go with a non-reflective screen.

Zeptos are good quality and are sold in your country as well:

The Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Si1520 is also an excellent machine, but I'm not sure it is available in The Netherlands.

Thanks for the advice!
@ Juan Ker; wat do you mean with 2 hours? There must be some notebooks that will survive a 3 hour essay-writing?

I'm now reading about the MSI S2X0 series. It looks promising. A small 12" with a battery-time around 3 hours with a 8 cell.
I'll let you know my findings!
