Re: gaming laptop
you could try the asus s96j. 15.4 inch notebook with ati mr x1600. configure one for yourself at www.powernotebooks.com . it's listed as the "powerpro 2:24" You can get a basic one with 1 gb 667 ram (single module), a core duo t2400, and the other basics you will need for $1350-1450.

Re: gaming laptop
I would surely recommend you the DELL XPS M1710. Its perfect but the only problem is the affordability.
The Satellite P100 is another alternative.

Re: gaming laptop
and just out of curiosity, what are you guys' opinions as to how i should configure? I'm thinking 2ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb 7200rpm hd, nicer screen.. i know the price would come down considerably if I bring those down a bit, but I don't want game performance to suffer a lot. what would you suggest?
Answer:
Re: gaming laptop
There isn't much difference in terms of performance between 1.83Ghz and 2Ghz, while 2Gb of RAM are a must for gaming. I also thoroughly concur to a 7200rpm HD.
You can get all this in a 5.4-pound Compal HGL30 from powernotebooks.com It comes slightly under or over $1500.

Re: gaming laptop
you can look into the asus a8jm... that's what i'm hoping to get soon
Answer:
Re: gaming laptop
well the compal is nice.. however i was stcuk between the compal and the asus z96j...
now you can look at my config at the bottom i ordered that on friday... 7/28
i chose the 512hypermemory because its guarenteed to be faster than a 256dedicated since it is 256dedicated + 256 shared memory... and i always favored ati more than nvidia because ive had an ati 8mb graphics card for 6 years now :D
so its really up to you but look at my config and see if it fits your needs, the price of that was 2109.00 thats with shipping, and i paid by credit card so i didnt get the extra 2.5% off.
now you can lower the upgraded optical (i upgraded it so i can burn dvds and cds) also you can lower the hd to 80gb, and the coreduo to 1.83ghz and you should be around 1700-1800 :D
but im sure the 512hypermemory is going to give me more fps in high quality games than a 256dedicated.

The X1600 is 256MB ded. + 256MB shared - the shared memory does nothing for your performance, HM is generally poor.

Re: gaming laptop
I highly recommend the Asus Z96J. It is portable, incredibly light, runs cool, cheap, fast, gets good battery life(for a gaming laptop) and it's rock solid.
Check out my review. I'll be posting it probably by the end of today.
