Thanks.
Yeah, £600 = 1,126 USD
I really like the look of this Sony and this Lenovo, but I dont know much about laptops so have no idea if its good value for money. But they are SO much cheaper in the US, this Sony VAIO VGN-BX561B works out at £426.
I also really like the look of this Acer £320 and this Dell £373. If Dell DO international shiping then I think its a great deal. I checked on Lenovo IBM site and they have said they definitely do not ship outside the US, but cant find any information on the Dell site.

Buying internationally means you will have to pay import duty and if it needs repair you will need to pay for shipping to/from the US unless its an international warranty. Sony definately make you ship to the US if you bought your laptop there as will other manufacturers. Dell are in the UK and so will probably tell you to buy from their UK site.
I would strongly advise AGAINST getting a laptop from abroad, its far more hassle than its worth. There are laptops available in the UK at a good price.
For your needs the Asus A8F from here is a good fit. It has a core colo 1.67 GHz , 512MB RAM, 60GB HD. It also has a lot of extras for a budget laptop like DVDRW drive, wireless, bluetooth and 2 year warranty included in the price. Also comes with a free mouse and bag...all for £534!

I totally agree, it aint worth it.

Thats not quite true, those companies have outlets in this country, but their prices are very high, and not the same as the prices in the USA.
I agree the asus is the best choice, small, portable, powerfull, and a big warranty
Hope this helps

Re: Cheap laptop needed for a uni law student
Agreed, buying from UK stores or online is better, and buying from abroad isn't worth the hassle
Having said that, we do not get good prices :p Prices in the UK/Europe are insanely high, compared to US prices. That's allowing for tax and shipping  :D

Re: Cheap laptop needed for a uni law student
If you get it shipped from abroad you're going to have to pay VAT and customs charges, which will write off pretty much any price advantage as the charges are very significant, probably around £150-£200 on a £600+ laptop after factoring in admin fees and such. As an example I got charged £50 for a £180 PSP. Factoring in the hassle and probably loss of warranty its simply not worth it.

Yep, very helpful, cheers guys. If only I was American lol.
So out of the Asus, Sony and Lenovo you think I should go for the Asus??? I definitely need something very reliable as I really cant be bothered with getting it repaired and what not all the time

Re: Cheap laptop needed for a uni law student
Asus make some of the best machines around. Infact Asus manufacture Sony laptops and have also made IBM notebooks. So build quality is not an issue. If you still need convincing then go into the Asus forum and see what they have to say about build quality. I cant recommend Asus enough.
