Question:
Need professional help choosing the right laptop
Hey, folks! I am about to purchase a new laptop and I was just wondering what you guys think I should buy. You can see my preferences below, but in general, Im looking for a stylish notebook that will have a good video card and good performance. (Core Duo 1.6-2.0 Ghz) You probably all know how hard it is to find "the one", so you might as well help me with the laptop ;). Let me know, what you think, would be the best option for me. Thanks!
General Questions:
1) What is your budget?
1500
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
General student tasks, might be working with photoshop and many other programs.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Most likely I will be using it at home, rarely taking it somewhere. Weight is not a big concern.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Definitely (if i have time lol). I will be playing new games, which require a good video card.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Not really. Acer would be a better option I believe but it doesnt really matter to me.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Average, don't really care much.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Perhaps, although I will probably buy it through a friend of mine, so I need to find the exact model.
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
Canada
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Whichever is better, I guess widescreen.
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Not sure about this one... I'd prefer the one that allows small icons and good movie quality. Perhaps... b
b. SXGA - 1400x1050 - Compromise resolution between XGA and UXGA.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Does not really matter, but glossy sounds/looks cool :D
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Quite important
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
I'm planning to buy one this month, unless it is really worth waiting for something new to come out!
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
This does not matter, 80+ would probably be the best option, but I can live with less.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
Yes, any of them is good.

Re: Need professional help choosing the right laptop
I believe milestonepc has a store in the Toronto area. They have the barebones VBI version of the HEl80 of their website for 699. You will be able to equip that for what you need at or below 1500 no problem.

There's a link to the page. I would save some money getting the 1.66 gpu and put more money into the ram/hdd. You can save even more here if you have access to a copy of xp.

Interesting, but I never heard of Compal. How is it compared to others? Also, how good/bad is the video card for playing games on AS5672WLMi?

I recommend you read the to check the differences btw different vid cards.
The X1600 is a performance card, it'll run pretty much all the games out there. You'll probably have to tone down some settings for demanding games like Fear, but it's completely playable.
Cheers.
