Question:
IBM Thinkpad Z60T vs MacBook 13''
Ive come down to these two. The two biggest questions are: Do I want to make the switch to Mac OSX? Yes, but how bad? Also, how badly do I want/need the core duo cpus? Would you say that core duos are now the norm. and its not worth getting anything less than that - like a single P-M?
The Z60T I can get for $1000CDN, brand new. Only things I would have to do to it are adding a DVDRW drive (which I have), and more ram, but it also comes with 3yrs warranty through IBM with that price. Main reason, Id get IBM - build quality! Though Ive heard this model has some screen issues for not being the brightest.
MacBook I would add ram, and after doing all the math and adding taxes, it would end up costing $500 more than the thinkpad.
The two big questions are, how bad do I need Core duo, and how bad do I want to use Mac OSX. Also, would I rather use a more stable IBM product that comes with a 3yr warranty or a first gen Apple laptop that still has issues/bugs that have yet to be fixed.

I can offer an answer to if Core Duo's are the "norm". Basically, Core Duo is so good because of it's dual core, which if you plan on keeping a laptop for a few years, if somewhat of a neccesity. It's also available in so many laptops these days, its worth considering. The dual cores will help out in multi-tasking, and thats where the most gain is to be had from these processors. That reason alone is enough to take these over Pentium M. they may be cheaper, however, they perform a little slower to Core Duo, and they don't have the second core. So, in relation to your question, yes, the Core Duo is the standard processor you should consider. I would also like to suggest that if you want dual core, but don't like the price of Core Duo, that you have a look at Turion. It is cheaper, and while it performs slightly slower than Core Duo, is very good value.

Thanks for the input Zero ^
Only thing is, IBM doesnt stock Turions in their thinkpads.
I guess it all comes down to, do I want something pretty or something built like a tank and not as fast benchmark wise but also cheaper.

For personal use, I would suggest you consider the entry level Core Duos at the very least as they perform quite well especially when multitasking :)

Don't really know what your use or price range but I would suggest a Toshiba. I own a Satellite A105 and have no complaints. I got it with 100 gi hard drive and only 512 ram but it does have built in wireless and cd/dvd burner. I could have upgraded into 1 gig of ram but it was out of my price range and it would be cheaper to put a 512 ram ungrade in its empty upgrade slot anyway. I got it at Best Buy for $730, the notebook came with a free minimouse from toshiba when you register it as well. As far as Thinkpads go, they are built extremely well. Very strong, but if you are going to buy a notebook that needs to be strong, I suggets a toughbook by Panisonic. It is very strong but pricey. For all around performance, I would have to suggest a Toshiba, but its all up to you.
