Question:
Dell e1505 coming -- What are the first things I should do?????
Couldn't find a better place than here to stick this thread, so mods...if you have a better place to put it, feel free.
To everyone else, I need some advice. I've got a Dell e1505 coming in the mail in a few days. 1GB RAM, 60G HD, ATI x1300...
Aside from wiping the Dell crapware and reformatting with a fresh WinXP install, what are some of the first software installs/tweaks/configs I should make?
For example, are there any must-do reg tweaks? How about re-configuring the paging file? Any essential software to install? (Note: aside from the obvious, like Office XP, spyware removers, etc...)
It's been awhile since I've started fresh, so I'm a little out of the loop when it comes to power-user mods these days.
Any ideas, advice, etc would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I usually go through msconfig and take a bite out of the startup programs. Also, you can select "no gui boot" in msconfig, which shaves a few seconds from the boot time.
There are a bunch of other things I do - like alter virtual memory settings, reduce system restore and recycle bin %s...

Well (even though you said it), get Ad-Aware, and a free Antivirus up (like Avast! or AVG) pretty quick, and perhaps even a firewall just to be on the safe side.
Get Mozilla Firefox for your internet needs.
Oooh and get some cool themes. I'd get the Royale XP theme, just got it and it's pretty sweet.
That was all pretty obvious.. oooh well.

Yeah after updating virus protection and stuff, update your drivers, especially your x1300, which I have as well, from dell.com then go to drivers.

What should I set the virtual memory at, considering I've got 1GB of RAM, although an x1300 ATI graphics card, which I've heard uses the RAM to help itself....
To clarify, I suppose I'm not looking for advice on software... I'm pretty in-the-know when it comes to that...More along the lines of must-do tweaks and reconfigs...

Don't forget to do a Disk Cleanup and also a Disk Defragment. Mainly do it after you do everything else (tweaks, driver installations, Window Updates, etc.). It will save you some labor.
