Here's what I'm looking for in a laptop,
1) What is your budget? <1400 cdn(~1250 US) (including tax)
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
-Maple, Matlab, Office, internet and some photoshop
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
-Taking it to school on a daily basis
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
-no games.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
-any
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?

8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?

There is a Toshiba M100-JG2 at my local BestBuy for $1099. The specs are:
-Centrino duo T2300
-1GB ddr2
-100GB HDD(Toshiba)
-64MB shared video

The Fujitsu S7110 t2300 core duo 80gb CrystalView is on sale right now for Cdn$1300,.. see it at NotebookOutlet in Pacific Mall in Toronto.
This is a nice laptop and the price is a temporary Fujitsu promotion only for a week or two. Google it, you'll see it sells for much more in the US.
And it's a fujitsu... there are only 3 laptops in this world: Fujitsu Mac and IBM right!
The rest are disposable junk that say "i am a peon serf" haha

Other notebooks have their place as well. Yes a HP or Dell consumer notebooks are not as well built as a ThinkPad, but you are paying a lot less and for some people thats OK. I have been impressed with the sturdyness of my Compaq.

Thanks for your replies. I am leaning towards the fujitsu or the Toshiba. I've found this Sony at Staples: http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...affixedcode=WW
The specs are: 1.86GHz Centrino, 1.0GB DDR2, 100GB 5400RPM HDD for $1299.

That fujitsu s7110 isn't displayed anymore at NotebookOutlet
Store was closed, so i dont know if Fuji just removed it (i know it was a loaner) or if the fujitsu back-to-school promo is over (dont think so)... serious that $1300 fuji is a fine deal and a fine looking laptop so hurry.
The fujitsu trounces the toshiba satellite like a bmw trounces a cavalier. Expect heat issues in that satellite, i know someone who got it and regrets it, and had to get a laptop cooler.

Any coments on the ASUS Z62F? I can ge it from milestonePC.com for $1200 with a 1.66 GHz core duo, 1GB ram, and a 80 GB HDD.
