Question:
$900-$1100 CAD budget, need help.
1) What is your budget?
$900-1100 CAD before tax
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
14" or 15"
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
I’m going to be using it for school to take notes during lectures (so I need a good battery to last at least 3 hours as some of my lectures are that long) I’m also going to be watching videos and playing games during breaks and on public transit.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
I'll be taking it to lectures for note taking, also on public transit. At least 5 days a week.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
I want to be able to play these games on at least 800x600 or 1024x768 and medium settings. Half-Life2/Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield 2, Maybe even Oblivion, Doom3, Quake4, Prey or upcoming QuakeWars on low/med settings at 800x600 or 1024x768.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Not really.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
At least 3 hours, but ideal would be 4 or 5.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
After some consideration, I don’t mind. As long as the shipping is not too expensive.
9) What country are you buying this in?
Toronto, Canada.
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
I use 1024x768 on my 17" if I can do 85hz on higher resolutions then I would use higher. But I guess 1024x768 should be fine.
11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
I wan't something easy to see but not too expensive.
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
I don’t care about looks, or brand.
13) How long do you want this laptop to last?
As long as possible but at least 3-4 years.
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
At least 60-80GB, however 100GB or even 120GB would be nice.
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive?
Most come with DVD-CD/RW anyways but I only need a DVD/CD drive since I have a good DVD-CD/RW burner on my desktop.
I'm willing to buy stuff online now and maybe even get discounts since there are various online deals and mail in rebates. But I don't want to pay too much money on shipping.
My current desktop is old and is not able to handle some of the newer games that well. (P4 1.6Ghz, 768 DDR RAM, 9700 Pro get's only 2226 with 3DMarks05) For example BF2 online is not very playable, Quake4 & Prey online are not playable and I only get 30-35 fps single player on low settings while online I get 10-15 fps. I want a laptop that can handle these games with okay fps 40-60. At least a X1400, X1600, or a Go7600. A Go7800 would be really nice, but I doubt I can afford it. I prefer Nvidia because there is a chance I might run Linux but if an ati card is a lot better on fps I will go with them.

You're asking a lot for $1,100 CAD. You will probably have to make a sacrafice in the gaming part - finding a decent dedicated card at that price point will be hard, and if you do, it will probably not be very good.
Since you are going to be running all over the place with this thing, then I'd recommend staying with a 14" machine. 15" gets bulky very fast. The HP dv2000 series is worth a look, along with the Lenovo 3000 N100 if it is within your budget.
Dell....
right now the 6400 you get...
t2400 processor 1gb ram, 120gb hd, x1400 256mb vid card for 999$ CDN
add the 9 cell battery for 40$.
not a bad deal.
Yeah it's actually pretty good, thanks.

BestBuy has the Compaq V3000 (V3010CA) on sale for $900. Turion X2 TL-50 1.6GHz, 512MB ram, 100GB HD, DVD+/-RW, integrated Nvidia 6150. Take the extra cash to get the 12-cell battery and add aftermarket ram.
Unless you really need that X1400 I'd get something smaller than 15.4".
