A Dell Inspiron B-series or an Acer TravelMate 2400 series are two good choices for ~$500:

Check the Dell Outlet for the B-series, often you can find notebooks there heavily discounted.

You should be able to grab an inspiron E1505 from dell outlet for around $500. Definitly a core solo one, but maybe even a duo!
