DVD rom would suffice.
Just need one for travelling a lot and listen to songs whlie doing that. I know i can use a iPod for that, what i mean is something i can listen to while working on the laptop....... :S Would like max battery life.

Check out the hp dv2000 series, you can configure it around $1000 and opt for a not too powerful, but still dedicated gpu.

if you take the hp you'd better take the intel processor instead of the turion because it wil have longer battery life.
