Do you buy a spare battery and extended warranty?

Question:
Do you buy a spare battery and extended warranty?
I'm a foreign grad student about to buy his first laptop, and I'm shopping for a 15.4 number with a good screen and respectable graphics card. I'm starting with the Acer AS5672WLMi as a starting point, but am sorely tempted to deck out an Asus Z96J.
I just want to ask if it's a good idea to buy a spare battery and extended 3-year warranty for your notebook. For the Asus, for example, that's an additional $224.

I bought with a credit card that doubled my warranty as long as it was only a one year warranty. I now have 2 years, one is with my credit card company.
I hope you have fun being a foreign grad student. I am going to be an exchange student in Ecuador in a few weeks.

you should check out the warranty guide to give you a good understanding of warranties. the battery is really a personal preference, dependent on how much time you spend not plugged in. in my experience, there has always been an outlet nearby when i was at school, though not at coffee shops.

Spare battery is most useful when you have a modular bay, the Z96J does not have this feature. I say don't waste your money on it.
Warranty is nice to have. Z96J should come with a nice warranty if you buy it from the right places ;)

I've never tried this before and have no US credit card so have to borrow a relative's. Can you get extended warranty via credit card on a Z96j?
