The Dell Inspiron E1705 is your best bet here. Optional 17" WUXGA display and Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS video card, one of the fastest on the market. Use the Dell Coupons to drag down the price.

The HP nc8430 comes with an ATI x1600 with 256 MB (see my sig). I paid little over $1600 on Buy.com. While it is not a 17" screen, 15.4" is not that small either.

If you want any poratablity or build quality, go with a 15.4" with a X1600/7600 card. NC8430, HEL80, Z96J come to mind.

for the most power/price ratio nothing beats the 7900gs..though the ones homeskillet recommended are good..especially if it is ever going to leave your desk
