Ideal Notebook for a I.T Student

Question:
Ideal Notebook for a I.T Student
Hey All...
Just wondering, what would be you folks recommend as a Laptop / Notebook that would be Ideal for an I.T Student? Here's a general Rundown of my Requirements:
- I won't be running any games, not much of a gamer, however I will be doing Intense VMWare, Virtual Server, etc. No Photoshop, but will be doing a little Illustrator.
- Don't really car for Screen Size, Resolution or Video Cards....
- My Max Budget will be $1600
- RAM & Hard Drive Space, plus a bit of Speed as always is Important & very helpful.
- Leaning towards HP, Compaq & Gateway. Dell's Quality is Questionable IMO Right now after this Battery Recall....
Thanks you all for your Suggestions....

You might want to consider the HP dv8000t, which is a 17-inch desktop replacement notebook which can be customizable to your needs.
Other options include the Toshiba Satellite P100 series and the Sony Vaio AR series (pricey).

A little too Pricey. How about anything with a AMD Turion X2 Proc? Don't the Core Duo's run a bit hotter than the AMD's?

Re: Ideal Notebook for a I.T Student
I am currently looking at a notebook to do the same. Honestly I would get a laptop that has a modular cd drive and get a 2nd hard drive for your images. From what I've found out VMWare server does not take advantage of Intel's VT in 32bit mode. The Core 2 Duo will resolve that issue. I'm not sure about MS Virtual Server 2005. I would take a look at the Thinkpad T60, HP NC8340, HP NC6400 or ever Dell Latitude D620 and D820. Personally I would never consider a home line laptop. Business all the way.
Good Luck

Re: Ideal Notebook for a I.T Student
Well I have a dv5000t and am pretty happy with it... am actually seeking an after-market 7200rpm drive for it- otherwise the unit is pretty nice.
For what it's worth, I'd only recommend Dell or HP/HP-Compaq for anything.
Dell notebooks, stick to the Latitude Line D6xx or D8xx right now. I have users with both D6xx and D8xx with "no" problems... we also have users with HP/Compaq, and again no problems there.

Re: Ideal Notebook for a I.T Student
as you can see i have the hp nc6400 and can't say enough good things about it. very nice screen, really nice battery options (you don't have to get rid of your optical drive to use more then one battery:). The build is great and I love the overall feel of the notebook. This is my third HP business notebook (nc8230 and nc6220) and I don't think I will ever wander from that line again. You won't be dissappointed with them in anyway. Especially now that they have improved the screens. The nc6400 is 200nits, much higher then most of your other business laptop screens right up there with the lenovo flexview (considered the best matte screen out there). It is also very clear and not grainy like other screens (read the dell 620 and acer 8204)
