--
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
Probably up to £1000 but I'd really rather not spend that much.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen preferred, but open to other suggestions.
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Word processing, internet etc., storing and playing music and occasionally a little gaming (see 5). No notable video or image processing.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Not too frequently, mostly just to Uni Library (not far) and back and forth from home to Uni (reason for a laptop rather
than desktop).
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
A bit. Mostly RTS or similar (incompetence precludes me from FPS). I can handle not being able/only just being able to
play the very latest games.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Don't care.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
A couple of hours; not a major factor.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
No
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
Buying in the UK
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? & 11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Probably Standard and XGA but if that's inappropriate for what I want to use it for then please tell me.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Whichever is standard on a Dell Inspiron (I can't seem to find out easily but I *think* it's matte) because I've used that a bit and it's OK.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not very, but maybe as a tiebreaker.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
Buying to arrive by late September, probably to last 3/5 years.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
Towards the 120GB end for music and general clutter.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD reader/CD-RW

Other comments: Both wired and wireless network access are important. I plan to try dual booting this with windows and linux, so it would be nice to have a largish hard drive for two sets of progs, and also ideally a wireless card/rest of hardware that will work without too much trouble with linux.
Thanks,
Ben

Re: Laptop for Uni Student
Normally I would recommend the Asus F3J but there is an awsome deal on an HP laptop here. Specs - Core Duo 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD and ATI x1600. The laptop comes with a 3 year warranty but the other freebies are naff.
That laptop is very powerful and will play any game.

Can't you just cover your laptop on home insurance instead?
