Question:
22/m seeks sexy machine (no fat comps)
but seriously...
I'm going back to school this fall trying to finish my architecture degree and I need a semi-portable laptop that will be able to handle multiple programs such as maya, photoshop, and autocad. (perhaps rarely all at once)
at anyrate I will answer some of the questions you guys need to know from the FAQ
1) What is your budget?
Well, its a bit up in the air. Ofcourse less is better, but if its sub $2000 USD, (or just above) thats great with me.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
I'm going to go with 15-16. I think I need a lot of screen to work with CAD and MAYA, as well as discuss the projects to proffesors and other students. I think 17-19 would be nice, but for the price of one it might not be worth it for me. I'm not a gamer.
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Like mentioned before I will be using programs such as maya and photoshop the most. AutCadd work also, but that isnt so intensive. There is also a push at school to try to use different 3d modeling programs, so I'm not really sure what other programs exactly, but I can be expected to have others such as SketchUp and FormZ as well.... Plus all the usualls such as MSWord, the occasional DVD.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
I will be using it mostly at school (in an office type enviroment), and at home. Mostly in bed I assume. Also I will sometimes take it to the local park and sit in the grass... hell, throw in a long walk on the beach while your at it..
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Not particulaly, however, I have gotten into battlefield 1942 becuase of my brother and might play part two if I decide to buy it.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I dont know very much about the different brands, other than what ive read on this site (great site btw), but I do want somehting that will last me for several years.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I would LOVE to be able to have a very long battery life. There isnt to many spots to plug in at school and architecture majors often spent 90% of their lives at school pulling all nighters. Long battery life is a MUST
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Absolutly. I dont mind at all so long as it has good/great reviews.
9) What country are you buying this in?
I am in the US of A, texas
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Widescreen, definatly.
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900
my eyesight is mediocre and I dont like how small my brothers icons and such are... but im not to picky. I would get used to it most likely.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Glossy does sound VERY appealing to me right now, but I'm not sure if I would need it. I would LOVE to have it, but if it puts me over budget, it could go.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
I try not to be vain, but who the hell am I kidding, style is awesome.
14) How long do you want this laptop to last?
I think that when I graduate with my masters I will treat myself to an awesome machine... so this one should last me untill then... so... 4-5 years?
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
I have TONS of mp3's so the more harddrive space the better. 120+ is great... 100 is good enough
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
I am going to be having to burn DVD's and such for school so I would need something.
anyway, thank you guys so much, I really do need assistance because im kinda lost in this new e-world... :) <3
oh, and for kicks... this is one that I was kinda looking at.

Dell D820 with the Quadro card might worth a look as well.

Re: 22/m seeks sexy machine (no fat comps)
hmmm... looking at those, i think the Latitude D820 is the best deal...
I do have a question however... is the 512MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache any good? would I be able to render large 3d models quickly? or will it take some time? or is that more of a RAM issue? is 2g ram enough?
and is the Mobility 256mb ATI Radeon x1600 PCI-Express 3D Video any better? worse?

oh, and I dont need this right away... my desktop im on IS on its last leg, but it can hold out a couple more months... do you think it would be wise to wait to see if price drops? my little bro was telling me something about a new prossesor coming out? would that lower the price of all the others?
I could buy in august... anything worth waiting for?

the gpu in the nw8440 would be your best bet. or the one in the dell m65. you can find the nw8440 cheaper if you check froogle or pricegrabber.
