Re: College Laptop
Try ibuypower.com-look at the HEL-80, you can configure that pretty well. I'd get that for undergrad for myself, but i want something just a tad lighter. (it's about 6 lbs) but it has seen a lot of good reviews.

Re: College Laptop
How am I supposed to build all of that together? Would I have to talk to an
expert who takes money for putting those parts together?
Isn't there a notebook which already has all the parts in it? Is there actually
an advantage of buying the barebones of the Asus S96J and then adding a
Cpu, drive, etc. considering the expenses?

Re: College Laptop
Well, of course-you can BYO it by getting a chassis at like directron, and slapping on a cpu, ect ect. I was suggesting it so you can pick what parts you want to skimp on and where you want more of (say harddrive space versus RAM). When you order that stuff, I'm sure you could ask people here and they could give you good recommendations of how much ram or hd space or processing power you'll need. BTW-when you customize it, it's not like they're shipping you the parts for that, they BUILD IT FOR YOU-hence why it's customization. I'm just suggesting it because you can really get a sense of what you NEED and what you DON'T NEED-which is often shown through big name manufacturers-in the dept of bloatware. but yeah, even hardware too. So anyways, that's what i was suggesting. you'll prolly need about a gig of ram, maybe 80 gigs of hd space? If you're not a fan of customizing and having it built custom, then you could probably just buy like an asus ensemble, but if you're gonna get one of those, you'll prolly just come across the option to customize it instead of buying it the ensemble way-because you sacrifice warranty (ASUS has that policy where if you make modifications to their ensemble lappies, it voids the warranty)-perhaps that's why i'm suggesting an customizable laptop, from like ibuypower.com.
btw, the asus s96j is pretty good. I agree with vlad with that option.

Re: College Laptop
I visited ibuyPower and the Hel-80 looks quite interesting.
It's not that I am not a fan of customizing 'n all - I usually always customize
my desktop pc. I was just wondering how they are supposed to put all
the parts together if you buy your asus s96j at a retailer and the cpu and
drives at another one ...?
EDIT: it doesn't seem like iBuyPower offers any financing options... :(
too bad.....

Re: College Laptop
Ok i personally have no expereince in ibuyPower at all, but ALOT of people are against them. People say that they tend to mail a lot of bad parts, and they sometimes give you a hard time when you try to return stuff or exchange parts.

Re: College Laptop
vlad-interesting. Well, myself included, am not an ibuypower client...maybe the HEL-80 can be found through other dealers as well. I doubt all the compal hel-80 users got their notebooks from ibuypower-google it up and see who else carries it.

Re: College Laptop
Couldn't find that Hel-80 anywhere else.... I looked at pricescan.com and bizrate.com, too but couldn't find anything. Thats kinda strange though.
What do you mean by "bad parts"? Refurbished stuff?
