Question:
I'm totally confussed on what to get
Alright guys so I'm going to school next year and need a laptop. I dont want it to be more than 7lbs and prefer a 15/15.4'' screen. no smaller than 14''. It needs to have core duo and 1gb ram and 100gb hd. I can spend $2000. It will mainly be used for school work, surfing the net, a decent amount of photo editing, dvd playing, and the ocasional gaming. The games will moslty be racing games maybe some first person shooters. Im really not that laptop savvy so you guys will have to help me out. Ive been seriously looking at the lenovo z61p and recently started considering the asus w3j and a configured toshiba a100. id like the graphics card to have 256mb or more and a high resolution screen so they can deal w/ the games and dvds. thanks in advance

More so than the other two? I always saw HP as a cheap brand with poor build quality tahts on par with mid to low range dells. Is there anyway to put a 100gb 7200rpm on this because theres no option to configure it on hp's site. And if you dont mind explaining why the hp seems like a stronger candidate than the lenovo or asus...

Do you need notebook now, or can you wait for a bit? I think there are Core 2 Duo laptops on the horizon...

i would actually seriously consider the w3j. it boasts excellent build quality on top of being both powerful ( 2ghz core duo + ati x1600 w/256 dedicated vram) and portable (tipping the scale at about 5 pounds). the downside would be that its more costly (relative to hp and toshiba) but you can easily get one for under 2000 dollars.
as for the "should i wait for merom" question, its a matter of personal preference. you really arent going to see that much of a difference in performance anyways. and I know that asus has released a bios update for merom so you could upgrade the processor yourself later on if you want to. bottom line: if you have the extra cash and care about build quality, you cant go wrong with the w3j.

Take a look at the ASUS S96J/Z96J and F3Jm, and the COMPAL HEL80 along with the HP nc8430 that you've already looked at.
In 14.1", there's the ASUS A8Jm & W3J, and the Compal HGL30 as well.

Re: I'm totally confussed on what to get
The HP nc8430 is a business class notebook and has better build quality than the Pavilion models. It come with a three year warranty. The nc8430 is quite light for a 15" notebook, only about a 1/2 pound heavier than the Asus though it is a bit more bulky. The Z61p has a WUXGA screen which for most will strain the eyes with its small text. It also has a GPU that is not meant for gaming though it will work. The Asus is a great notebook as well. Might be a better choice if you need lots of mobility. Yes, you can upgrade the hard drive on the notebook.
