Question:
$1000 college laptop
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
$1000 max, really don't want to spend any more than that unless it's really necessary.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
internet, spreadsheets and schoolwork.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Leaving it on the desk mostly, but plan on taking it to the library, etc.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Playing some games, KOTOR, original CS, whatever, nothing too GPU intensive (though I'd prefer a non-Intel GPU).
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Don't really care, just need something decent.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
2+ hours should be fine.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
nah.
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
US.
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
don't care.
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Don't care.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
doesn't matter.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
No.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
3, preferably the entire 4 years of college w/o warranty. This may be wrong, but warranties do cost a lot, and my dad does know his way around a computer (works for IBM), so I figure I can get by without a warranty, and simply order replacement parts, which might be easier. Hopefully doesn't completely suck after 4 years, spec-wise, probably going to grab an extra GB of RAM 2-3 years from now.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
80 GB.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD-CD/RW, yeah, clearly need an optical drive.
Laptops I'm looking at:
HP dv5000t/6000z/2000t
Dell E1505
Acer 5672/5102
Lenovo 3000N100/R60/T60 (IBM EPP)
The 4 year notebook life (or as much as possible) is a something I'd like very, very much, the $1000 budget is a sticking point.

Re: $1000 college laptop
if there is any way you can afford it, go with the lenovo t60. pound for pound they are great college laptops because of the keyboard and build quality. I just bought an hp to save money now that i'm out of college, and while I love the power it has, I miss my t41 quite a bit. You won't regret the t60.
If that does exceed your range, I would avoid the r60 and look at the 14in dell and hp options. 14in widescreens are still very nice. good luck with your search.

Re: $1000 college laptop
dv2000 and compaq v3000 seem like a good fit for you
Answer:
Re: $1000 college laptop
for what you are doing, i would consider the compaq 2000z
With 1000$, you can certainly get a really good warrenty, and it will meet your requirements of a non-intel GPU, 2+ hour battery life, etc.
And, correct me if im wrong, but I think that the turion and turion x2 uses the same socket, so you should be aable to upgrade to the turion x2 in the future if absolutely necessery.
