Question:
High end notebook help
hi,
i spilled soda on my W2V, and it's starting to die. i'm planning on a replacement. here are the answers to the FAQ:
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
up to $2200
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Mostly a work computer, with a lot of internet browsing, but occasionally play Neverwinter Nights, Everquest, and want the ability to play future games like this.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Mostly leaving it at my desk, but I want it to be as thin and light as possible, so I can travel with it when needed. Build quality is very important to me. I don't want any flex or creaking or anything like that. I'm used to the Asus W2V and want a similar high quality casing/frame/hinges.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Yes, sometimes. Neverwinter Nights, Everquest.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Brands I like: Asus, IBM/Lenovo
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Not a huge factor, 2 hours is fine.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Not at all.
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
United States.
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Standard, but I'm fine w/ widescreen as well.
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Standard
a. XGA -1024x768 - Large and easy to read text + graphics icons, but you fit less stuff on the screen.
b. SXGA - 1400x1050 - Compromise resolution between XGA and UXGA.
c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen.
Widescreen
d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Either is fine.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Yes. Build quality especially, design a close second. Again, if possible, would like the sleek build quality of the Asus. I would wait for the V1J, but my laptop could die any day, and I can't be without for more than a few days.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
Buying in the next month. Would like to have this for at least 2 years.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
7200 RPM is more important, with a minimum of 80GB.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
Yes, DVD burner is a plus, not a must.
IMPORTANT: Wherever I buy, I must have a warranty that covers accidental spills. This is a make it or break it issue for me now.

Re: High end notebook help
How bout getting the V6J and spend the extra 200 bucks on insurance from something like safeware.com ?
Answer:
Re: High end notebook help
yeh, the V6J is on my list for sure, but you think the 7400 can handle Neverwinter Nights or Everquest?
Answer:
Re: High end notebook help
both of those are fairly older games. the 7400go should be able to handle them well, though i don't know if you can have high settings. the 7400go performs a little less than the x700 in the w2v, so if your x700 played them well, then the 7400go should be just fine. you could also look at somethign like the acer 5000 or the hp nx8430 for something more business like (the spill-resistant keyboard is a plus ;P). you may also want to look at the lg s1, but the model that would fit you best, may be a bit above your budget.

The HP nc8430 sounds like a good suggestion that might fit you well.
