Question:
Have I done well?
Hey a friend of mine was in the market to get a new laptop in the next few days (ya kind'a sprung it on me). He wanted in his own words "15.4 inch widescreen, enough cpu and gpu to play world of warcraft hi-res hi graphics"
His budget was about $1600.00 US. He seemed a bit leary (sp?) of dell, has heard bad things. So I say ok and hit newegg.com, HP's nc8430 caught my eye for around his price range. Nice dual-core intel with an x1600 256meg (It is all real video ram not that shared stuff right?)
He said must atleast equal his current system which is:
Athlon 64 3400+
1 gig ddr 400
120gig (he doesn't mind the 80gig in notebook)
256 meg AGP 8x Radeon 9800 Pro
Which should be easy/better with the notebook right?
My only real regret is he won't get a 64-bit cpu :(
Ok guru's lemme know what you think :)

Re: Have I done well?
there's not much software that takes advantage of 64-bit cpus. i've heard of software crashes in 64-bit mode so i think 32-bit is still great for lots of things. vista will use the 64-bit architecture but there will be 32-bit versions

I suggest Asus Z96J,Even with Core 2 Duo it'll be less than 1600$ (I suppose)

Re: Have I done well?
But wouldnt you want an HP over an ASUS? and Core 1 or 2 are both very good for gaming.

Re: Have I done well?
There will be no difference between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo for gaming. The nc8430 is a well-built, business-class machine. Yes, it has an all-dedicated 256MB X1600.

Re: Have I done well?
Thnx all, sounds like it will meet all his world of warcraft needs :)
He just asked me whether when he upgrades the ram can he replace one of the 512's with a 2gig chip? Or is 2 1gigs cheaper/more practical? Since it does say it can take 4gig. Or does he need to have 2 matching ram chips? Sorry to ask so many questions but you are my goto guys/gals :)
