Well, from your post, it sounds like you really want a machine that will take a licking, and keep on ticking. Unfortunately, high build quality is going to cost a premium (both in $$$, and in weight), and given that you don't have a limited budget, I doubt that'll be a problem for you. Weight on the other hand, might be. The better the materials, the more it -usually- weighs.
IBM (aka Lenovo) is always going to have great build quality, as they are geared toward business users. You probably can't go wrong there, if you dont mind paying more, for the same machine.
Asus build quality is excellent as well, based on nearly every review people have made about them. The W3J would fit your category nicely, with carbon-fibers embedded in the plastic, and anodized aluminum on the lid. Weighing at 4.5lb (~4.1 with the blank multibay insert, instead of DVD drive), it wont be too heavy either. It's the one I'm considering myself.
Acer doesn't make bad laptops either. Their build quality is pretty good, from my experience (C110 Tablet in my sig). They are pretty mainstream on features, price, and size/weight.
Sony also has some nice offerings in the slim/light segment, with Magnesium-alloy cases. I do not know the exact model numbers, but they can be found in most major retail stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, etc)
Hope some of this gives you some direction. Ask away for more info.

Portable One UX
Fujitsu P7120
Asus Z62F/W7J
Sony SZ
Panasonic W5 or W4 - see Dynamism, these are THE tough and light notebooks, but the screen sucks
IBM X60 - because you mentioned keyboard, even though it doesn't have an optical

I've lookedat the SZ2 and it seems fine, except for all the complaints I've read about the space bar and the case falling apart. A $2000 mistake would make me very unhappy! :-(

From what I've read on the net, it doesn't seem very substantial. the W3J comes in at over 5 lbs. and the lenovos ( T60., I think) would ( ALAS!)require "schlepping" an extra bay along I might just end up with an SZ and a prayer
