Question:
HP vs Asus vs Acer
Ok I have this problem. I've always being a desktop user but times have changed and it is time to think smaller (the wife doesn't want a big huge desktop taking up a whole desk). I am mainly use the computer for gaming and watching movies. I've being going nuts reading tons of info on laptops and stuff and I think I've narrowed it down to three. Forgive for my ignorance.
1. HP Pavilion dv9005ea (europe version of dv9000z)
17" WXGA+, GeForce Go7600, Turion TL50(1.66), 1 GBram, 100GB HD, WLAN, XP Home (the only thing that bugs me is that it has L2 Cache of 512kb; is that important?)
2. AcerTM 4233WLMi 15.4" WXGA, Go7600, Core 2 Duo T5500(1.66),
1 GBRam, 100GB HD, WLAN, XP Pro
3. ASUS A6T 15.4"WXGA, NVIDIA Go7600, Turion TL52(1.66),1 GBram,
100GB, WLAN/BT, XP Home
The games I play are Counter Strike, Battlefield 2, NHL 06, Need For Speed: Most Wanted....quite new games. I'm most interested in performance. Please share any thoughts.

Re: HP vs Asus vs Acer
as far as i can tell these system are almost identical,
as for your question about the 512kb cache amd has a built in memory controler on all of there cpu's. so for what it lacks in cache against intel it gains in much faster memory access than the intel.
a cache just is a little bit of memory that is on chip. for very small proccess, the cpu would use the cache not the main ram. so basically intel cpu's don't have access the ram quite as offen but when it does it signaficantly slow than amd at access ing memory.
if you did not under stand that the basically equal each other out more or less
i like amd cpu's but i like that acer brand so... don't know what to say. what are the prices on these units?

Thanks for that explanation on L2 Cache, that was the answer I've been looking for.

The HP and the Acer are about 1200 Euros, Asus about 1100 Euros.

Actually I am open for either ATI or Nvidia but laptops fit with graphic cards are limited here in Sweden. I couldn't find the S96 or Hel80. I did just find a Acer Aspire 5112WLMi 15.4"WXGA,Turion X2 1.66,1 GBram,120 GB HD, XPH with x1600 for about 1070 Euros which is actually the best price off all 4 laptops. I read the review on this site and it made me kinda wary. How accurate are benchmarks?
Out the the three that I picked there are subtle differences. I like the HP cuz it was designed as an entertainment computer and has a bigger screen. The Acer has Intel CPU, and from what I read is a little faster. Asus is kinda my last pick.
The thing that is making my transition hard from desktop to laptop is
how well laptops really perform. How are CPU speeds measured up against its desktop counterparts? a Turion X2 1.66 or Intel T5500 Core 2 Duo equals what as a desktop?
Does a Mobility x1600 or Geforce Go 7600 run equivulant to a x1600 or 7600gs?
I read that some Acer screens have a response time at 16ms, and for a desktop 8ms is ideal for gaming. Does the same rule apply to laptops? what are the average response times for a laptop?
Harddrive speeds: 4200 rpm, 5400 rpm are they too slow?
Desktops cost about a third cheaper and I want a laptop but i don't want to throw away 1200 Euros for something with less performance either.

Re: HP vs Asus vs Acer
sir, you are overlooking the main thing, that really sweet acer you have there? its a core 2 duo... that means it will blow away those turions... and will use up so much less battery. you did mention however, that it was a "desktop replacement?" so im not so sure that battery matters anymore... but even then performance wise, those intel core 2's kill the amd's... and im a huge amd fan (all i ever "used to" put in my desktops). i myself am wondering which is better nvidia 7600 go or ati x1600...? anybody?

I know companies like to romanticize and here is probably no exception but the specs are still quite interesting for the t5500.
And yes I am looking for a desktop replacement but having a good battery is not a bad thing :)

If you don't mind a 17" laptop, and your primary interest is gaming... shouldn't you be looking at something like a Dell Inspiron 9400 (E1705) with a Geforce 7900gs? Or even better, an XPS... Just buy it with minimum HD/memory configuration and get 2gb RAM and a 7200rpm HD from Komplett or somewhere.

Yeah i'ved looked at dell. problem is that the price goes up about 250 Euros, and unfortunately I have a budget of about 1200 Euros.

Re: HP vs Asus vs Acer
yeah dell is horrible, try the hp dv6000t for core2duo and gaming, it comes with go7400 which is a mid-range graphics card.
