Re: DELL D420 Powerful enough?
I wouldn't get it for those applications. They're processor and memory hungry software apps so a faster processor and 2GB - 3GB of memory would be nice. The D420 will offer Core Duo in a 2-3 months if you want to wait, but it still caps out at 1.5GB, soooo, you might be upset with such a purchase.

If I'm just using the notebook for word processing, surfing the internet, listening to music....the Core Solo handle it fine, right? What are the advantages to waiting for the Core Duo for me, if I don't do gaming? Thanks!

Doesn't it take up more battery power though? Would it be necessary or very helpful for me to wait and get that as opposed to getting the Solo one now?

You might want to try the Dell D620, it is the same weight as the M1210 and is cheaper with a bigger 14" screen. It also has nVidia Quadro graphics, which could affect your CAD programs.
Yes, Duo does take more power than the Core Solo, but it still gets decent battery life.
