<$1200 college laptop

Question:
<$1200 college laptop
I need a laptop for college. I've already got a desktop that I use for gaming, so my laptop won't need killer graphics. I *want* good cooling, dual-core, 1gb ram, at least 15.4 inch, and decent battery life (doesn't everyone?). If price eliminates these, I guess I could settle for 64-bit single core. Any ideas?

Well since your on a lower end 1200 dollar budget for school, Id have to say one of your best bets is to get the most value for your dollar, which would be dell. The e1505 should suit all of your needs quite nicely. If you hate dell, and want more custimazation, you should head over to the Asus forums and check out some built-on Asus models. More bang for your buck.

Why exactly do you want 15.4" if you've got a solid desktop? Do you plan on taking this thing around? 15.4 will make it pretty hefty...

Re: <$1200 college laptop
I think it almost renders it useless for true portability, just able to carry a computer around when you need to (travelling, etc.). Not that you can even use it on a plane, it's probably too big.
Now, some people do lug around a notebook that big to class and such, but it seems like a hassle and it looks goofy.
Think hard about an ultraportable. What are you going to do on the notebook? Mainly work? Office, Firefox, Aim, Skype, a few other things? What will you do on your gaming desktop?
I don't use my dell anymore except for high CPU processes like DVDbackups and such, so I use my T23 (14inch, 5 lbs) at my desk and sometimes around the apartment, but I take my X30 (12inch, 3.5 lbs) wherever I go. That kind of ultraportability is, I think, what a laptop is for. Since you want screen space, look at a 1400x1050 14" notebook, or a similar 14.1" widescreen. Smaller screen but higher res, and the weight'll probably be in the 5 lb range which is about right. Anything more than 6 lbs seems like a hassle to carry around.
All of that is my opinion, mind you.

I tend to agree with you there. I really don't want to be lugging a huge computer around everywhere. My desktop is an AMD Athlon64 3500+, nVidia 6600GT, 1 GB corsair ddr400. I'll be doing all gaming on that, and probably some research too. The laptop will be mostly for more comfortable work (think on the bed), internet, text, skype, irc, maybe pics and video too. You got any brand/model suggestions?
