Question:
Hi, new to the forums and would like some help
Hey,
Im looking for a laptop which can run games such as HL2. I have seen that the 7900 GTX is a very good card and will run these games and latest games without problems, but in the UK these laptops are way over my budget.
I have seen a lot about the 512mb x1600 mobility gfx card for laptop and the 7600 turbo cache.
What are the 3D Mark 06 scores for these? I currently have a x1800 in my desktop and it scored 4000 in 3d mark 06.
Also do you think it would be worth saving up for the 7900 GTX/GS (Been reading around and these forums and it seems this is probally the best option as it will give me the best gaming and furture proof it a bit - anyone agree?)
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Re: Hi, new to the forums and would like some help
Hey welcome to the forum. It depends. If you are moving the thing around then you cant get anything higher than a x1600/7600 in a notebook i would call portable. The 1600 and 7600 are both fast though and will breeze through games like hl2. The 7600 scores about 2200 in 3dmark 06, so your x1800 is almost twice as powerful. If you filled out the FAQ that would help.

The Fujitsu-Siemens Xi 1546 is worth looking at:
17" desktop replacement with an ATI X1800. It is not going to be as power as your desktop when it comes to 3D performance, but should still be quite fast.
Another machine to look at is the Rock Direct Xtreme CTX, but that is probably over your budget.
15.4" - check out Zepto notebooks, they have some good 15.4" options like the 2425W.

The Sager NP5750 is now available with an X1800 card as well---but I'm not sure it's sold in the UK, or under what brand.

if halflife 2 is yoru biggest concern youll be fine with an x1600 or 7600, for reference my x1600 plays halflife 2 everything maxed including af and aa at over 100 frames per second, enabling vsync which became necessary slowed it down to about 60, but thats still plenty high, and on max settings.

rockdirect sells rebranded clevos/sagers. you should check them out. also, for notebooks with decent gpus around 15", you could also check out what's available at evesham. the dell 6400 or the hp nc8430 (for good build quality) are worth a look.
