Question:
HGL30 vs. Dell M1210
So, I showed a friend these two deals I've been offered and asked him for his recommendation. He said, "The Dell, no question. While the other is $300 more it only has a slightly better video card and 1.5gigs less ram... definetely go with the dell."
What do you guys think? Agree, or disagree? What if price wasn't an issue?

Re: HGL30 vs. Dell M1210
First off, the M1210 has a 12", not a 13" screen.
Even though I have one on order right now, I would probably not recommend the M1210, unless portability is your number one concern (as it is for me). You pay extra to cram all that power into such a small frame. If you don't mind going up to 14" (and apparently you don't since you spec'd out that Compal), then there are any number of systems that will give you better performance (especially gaming) for the same money.

Re: HGL30 vs. Dell M1210
The big question, as EricDB mentioned, is - does portability matter to you? You gotta answer that first. For me, portability and battery life is the key, while I want something that is powerful. As a result, M1210 was my choice.

Re: HGL30 vs. Dell M1210
Asus A8Jm performs better than the Compal HGL30 in benchmarks---but in everyday gaming, the difference will be minimal if at all perceptible.
Between the Compal and the Dell, I'd go with the Compal any day and twice on Sunday.

I second what others have said. really depends on what you need the machine for. Desktop replacement with occassional travel, or a machine that will be coming with you on a daily basis. If the later case is what you are looking for, then I think you might be dissappointed with both machines. At around 4.9 pounds with the 9 cell battery the xps m1210 is not exactly an ultraportable. Really its all about the user as well. A 6 3 220 guy isn't going to mind carrying around 5 lbs of weight (to him it will be an ultraportable) where as someone smaller in stature or strength might have an issue with it. That being said the HGL30 could be considered portable depending on who is carrying it.
You really need to specific what it is that you are looking for. Plus some idea about what kind of weight restrictions you are working with (assuming portability is an issue) If your not sure try carrying around something near the weight and size of the two notebooks you are looking at, and see what it feels like. The weight difference between the two is only somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 ounces. Some feel thats a big difference others see it as not very much.
One question I did have, in the xps m1210 configs did you opt for the built in camera, because if thats not included in the total i would seriously consider adding it. Its a great little feature that is really worth having.
Plus i am a little confused about the two deals. Now i am assuming this isnt a deal you are getting through a manufacturer or reseller. Because you could easily cut certain things that you just don't need, at least right away. The configs on the hgl30 are not that great and you could probably get just as good a deal ordering from an actually re seller. going through dell or a site selling the hgl30 would not give you a 300 dollar difference between 2 equal machines.
unless you are getting a real steal in the neighborhood of like 1200 bucks for one of these machines i say scrap it and look through an actually company

your not going to get the dell for 300 less then this, though going through dell you will be able to get simliar specs to the hgl30 i speced for you above with a core 2 duo processor (as dell doesn't have the option of regular core duo for the xps line now)
look around get yourself a better offer then the one you are considering.

Re: HGL30 vs. Dell M1210
the dell does peform in 3dmark tests over a thousand points lower. Now i have to say i dont know what this means as far as performance goes, but it does seem like a good disparity. both cards are underclocked so really its a good comparison to make. the m1210 peforms less then a 7400 gpu should and the hgl30 performs less then a 7600 gpu should. just something else to think about

I'm not a big guy, but for me it's much more about the size than the weight (within reason). An extra pound (over a true ultraportable) isn't a big deal to me, but an extra inch or two definitely does make a difference when I'm pulling it out of my backpack and setting it on the desk at school. That's why I settled on the 1210.
