Help me decide: Dell 6400 vs Acer 5112

Question:
Help me decide: Dell 6400 vs Acer 5112
Hi,
My priorities are gameplay (mostly strategy, with some FPS), multimedia and office productivity. I don't do anything radically intensive as rendering or 3 D modelling.
I'm kinda stuck between the 2 choices:
Dell 6400: I can get a Core 2 Duo, 2 Gb RAM, 120 Gb HD, 256 MB ATI x1400 for C$1,358.
Pros:
*Invincible super PI score - almost a minute better than Acer
*Great complete care warranty - full replacement available
*Well known for good build quality and durability
Cons5:
*Poor 3D mark performance compared to Acer
Acer 5112: AMD TL-50, 2 Gb RAM, 160 Gb HD, 128 MB ATI x1600 for C$1,299 (offer good only until 21 Sep - see futureshop.ca)
Pros:
*25% better 3d mark performance
Cons:
*Unknown to me
*Slow super PI performance
On the one hand I'm thinking that the super PI performance is really not such a big deal compared to 3d Mark, but then how significant is 3d Mark anyway?
Would like to hear some opinions, thanks!!!!

The Acer's more powerful graphics chip will give you better gaming. The Dell's might be a strong enough for you though, depending on what you're doing, and the Dell will be faster otherwise.

super pi is biased toward intel processors. most likely, you will not notice the difference between them, though the c2d is supposedly faster. as for build quality and durability, they are probably about the same. if gaming is a major priority, i would go with the notebook with the better gpu.

Hey wetnose,
I just purchased a Acer Aspire 5112 and after using for a while I am considering returing it and getting a Dell 6400. Here are my problems with it. First off its kind of cosmetic and does not impede the performance of the laptop but when the screen portion of the laptop is pushed back past vertical the left corner of the laptop will not stay down. I guessing thats because there is not weight on the left side. The battery is on the right side of the laptop so that keeps that side down. Thats an annoyance to me. Second I did a little research before I bought it and what caught my eye was the video card that was installed the ati radeon mobile X1600 which on the ati web site states that it has a 128 bit bus and 12 pipelines. This is not the case for this laptop. It is running a 64 bit bus and only 4 pipelines. If anyone out there can correct me on this please do so. That is a big hit to gaming performance. The latches at the top don't seem very secure. If you push down on the right latch the two latches down close only when you push on the left latch it closes. The laptop as a whole doesn't seem very sturdy or durable. I seen a dell 6400 and it was solid compared to the aspire 5112.
By the way which laptop did you go with after?
