I do web development stuff, so I will be doing alot of programming.
I want to dual boot linux and windows.
I don't like the idea of babying a laptop.
I roller blade / bike to school, I want it to be tough enough to sit in my bag and be ok. It should be able to take abit of roughness.
I want it to be light with a good screen and a good keyboard feel.
Battery life is important because I don't want to bring the AC if I dont have to. So mabye 3-5 hours or more.

The Lenovo N100 is a 15.4" notebook with WSXGA+ and good build quality. You can find it at www.milestonepc.com There you can also see several Asus notebooks that may fit your needs.
The Dell Inspiron 6400 is an option as well, and you can have it with a Core 2 Duo.
All of the above options can be configured within your budget.

Why not go all out and get the Z61? It's within your budget and does have significantly better build than the consumer line. Also the HP nc6400 would be a nice choice.
