Question:
Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
Just wondering whether or not the gpu will have a bearing on any of the performance on any of the above programs.
A friend of mine is looking for a laptop and she'll be mainly using these programs. One laptop she's looking at has the X1400 and the other has the gma950.

Re: Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
For PhotoShop, I do not think so, and integrated graphics would be more than enough, but for things with 3D modelling etc which Autocad and 3dMax are , it would be quite beneficial....

Re: Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
photoshop doesn't need GPU, but AutoCad, 3D Max and so on... are intenisive and demanding 3D design applications which need powerful GPU
So, just forget Gma 950. It's integrated card which is not designed for any 3D applications.
X1400 is good card but it's not designed exactly for 3D design and other CAD applications.
There are two series GPUs designed for CAD - Ati's FireGL and Nvidia FX
(for example: FireGl V5200 is the CAD version of X1600)

Re: Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
Her budget keeps increasing after I said she may have to get a dedicated card. I haven't seen the two cards mentioned in any laptops while searching. I was gonna convince her to get a zepto but figured that may be slightly evil as it would add a few hundred pounds to her total.

just did a quick google search and can't find them in any laptops, looked like they were desktop cards. Any laptop models you know of that have graphics cards like those mentioned for cad.

FireGl or FX are professional cards and they usally come with mobile workstations like ThinkPad T60 (with 256MB ATI FireGL V5200) and they are more expensive.
check here for notebooks with CAD card

wow, checked out some thinkpads and the only one with the firegl costs £2000 so i think she'll probably just be going with the x1400 laptop.

Re: Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
I agree with what was said above. If she's on more of a budget than those high-end cards allow though, I would highly recommend finding an NVIDIA card. NVIDIA does OpenGL MUCH better than ATI, and follows standards much better. AutoCAD and other 3D modeling apps typically use OpenGL rather than Direct3D, so if you do get a "gaming" level card, aim for an NVIDIA 7400/7600 or so.

Re: Graphics Card for Photoshop, Autocad, 3D max etc.
The Dell Latitude D620 (14") and D820 (15.4") are worth looking at if you are interested in applications like that. Should be reasonably affordable, although I do not know what your budget is.
I'll be moving this to the What to Buy forum so you get more recommendations.

These "Dell"s could be worth more then a look (hmm ...Dell) but they offer only NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M/120m which I wound not recommend for 3D Studio Max and AutoCad and for that price buying notebooks with regular card like 7400/7600 seems better to my mind...
