Cheap laptop for student
I am looking for a notebook to take for a semester abroad in France.
I don't need anything fancy, as I won't be running high load programs.
Since the notebook is going to france, I need something reliable, as it might be a burden to solve possible warranty issues.
How do you guys feel about remanufacturered/refurbished products vs new items?

Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen,
maybe even less

3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Internet browsing, college work involving mainly MS Office, an occasional dvd,
some mp3 playback.

4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Definatly taking it places, so size does matter.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
No games.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
None

7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the better. 2.5-3h is fine
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
I can buy online.

Best possible/affordable

I think matte will suit me betterm, but i am willing to consider glossy

13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not really, although the will be taken into account on similar not books.
I prefer good build qulity over style

40gb is plenty

Well then theres the v2000z with all the things you need = 785.00 USD after APP discount. Also since your not intrested in gaming, the HP dv2000t and also the v3000 (compaq) are good options too.

The Vaio SZ is definately out of my league.
As for think pads, whoat do you think about a refurbished T40 with Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz / 14.1-Inch XGA / 512MB DDR ?

Going refurbed is always a little more dicey because of the warranty. Should a problem arise, it will be expensive to fix, but the T40 is a well built notebook. The Core Duo will be relavent longer going forward. Plus it has better battery life than the Pentium M all thing equal which of course they never are.

the dell e1405 should be in your price range with the dell coupons. the d620 is barely in your budget for a low configuration, but it is a pretty durable notebook.
