even the wnsib mod needs help! :P

Question:
even the wnsib mod needs help! :P
Despite much temptation to buy earlier, I've held out for merom, and now it's starting to arrive, and I am intending to buy one soon as I cannot wait any longer.
Use: Bringing it to class and work everyday. will replace my desktop at one of my areas of residence and will pretty much be my primary computer for 9/12 months.
prefers: dedicated video, but not too much. don't 3d game very often, but when I do, its usually along the lines of BF2 (but i still prefer BF1942, and Hitman blood money, no oblivion). Prefer left side vent as a fujitsu I've owned previously had a right side vent at the back of the right side.. but I could still feel it. I also don't like mushy keyboards. Will probably keep it between 1-2 years. most likely 1 and a half.
options:
Dell XPS M1210 - 1.83ghz Core 2 Duo, 1gb Ram, Nvidia 7400, 60gb HD, dvd burner, XP media, bluetooth. $1320 (including sales tax, free shipping).
pros: good price, very sturdy lid as I've played around with my friends one. Cons: a bit worried the screen might be too small for long term use. Somewhat common around here
Sony SZ - 1.66ghz Core 2 Duo, 1gb Ram, Nvidia 7400, 80gb HD, cd/dvd combo, XP pro, bluetooth. $1440 (via p1, no sales tax)
pros: Great looks, i love the aluminum brushed palm rest. Great screen, can turn of GPU. better resale value
Cons: thin screen, easy to bend, one of the more pricier options, no dvd burner, must get it elsewhere. Bleh keyboard.
A8jm - 1.83 Core Duo, 1gb Ram, Nvidia 7600, 100gb HD, dvd burner,XP home, no bt. $1299 (open box from G2P)
pros: alot of power for the price, great price
cons: I really prefer 13.3", a bit reluctant to accept 14". right vent. not a fan of its styling either (yes seen it in person, I generally like black notebooks) Yonah.
W7? - 1.83 Core 2 Duo, 1gb Ram, Ati x1450?, 100gb HD, dvd burner, XP pro, bt (who knows when this will come exactly and how much it'll cost)
pros: nice all black design
cons: seems unlikely I can wait for this to arrive. right vent.

Might consider an HGL-30. It's 14.1", but it's left-side vent. It ships with Core 2 Duo's from most custom manufacturers (xoticpc.com, powernotebooks.com), Go 7600, etc.
Given your price range, you could probably configure one decently for what you want. Won't be quite like the machine I'm waiting on, but it should work ;)

You are also buying almost the same machine as I am at the same time.
Im signed up for the group buy on the a8js, that doesnt sound appealing to you?
You need a reprimand because you actually havent given the forumers your budget and date.
Thats all that matters. You and I both might have to pull the trigger before asus new machines comes out btw and end up with something we dont want exactly.
You need it to be 14 inch or smaller but you like the 13 inches it seems to me. I personally dont like any of those ones but I'll try to adapt to your tastes.
for the sony I really like their 15 inch model have you looked at that?

Find a V6va, and you won't be disappointed :p
The Z35f is also an option, though, the Alienware Sentia 12" looks nice *cough*

but no, the z25f and Alienware is no option because I'd like at least a dedicated video.
but as far as limitation goes, I'm looking at mid october, no more than $1500 (preferably around $1300), screen size no more than 14". even at 14" i'm a bit reluctant. I really do like the 13.3" screen size.

At 5.5 pounds, the HGL-30 is among the lightest 14" notebooks. Still heavier than most 13.3" solutions, of course. Of those you mentioned, I'd go with the Dell as it seems to be the one that has less cons (or at least cons that would be easier to adapt to).
Question: are you ruling out the W7J entirely? I hate that it can only have 1.5Gb of RAM, but that's pretty much its only noticeable con IIRC.
Edit: I'd completely forgot the HP nc6400... it has an X1300 card that's not great, but would run games. That one is the lightest 14" I know, at a mere 4.6 pounds.

C. actually the W7J was my very first choice a while ago. its only con (imho) was the battery life and the right side vent. but I really liked it's styling and compactness (im a fan of all black) and the webcam.
but I decided to hold out and wait for a core 2 duo version (at the time, I felt like I might as well hold out a lil more since merom was starting to appear). Im not ruling it out entirely, I may consider just taking the Yonah one (but at the moment, the xps is obviously a better value), and who knows when the upgrade will come out exactly. pretty much all my options involve some kind of compromise :(
