Re: Gaming laptop
I would recommend an XPS, but you seem firm on not getting a Dell. I would recommend a Toshiba P100 (reviewed on my sig), but since you would be taking it to different places, I suggest not getting a 17". The Toshiba is not at all heavy considering it's size, but still, I think a 15.4 would suite you better.
There lot's of great 15.4s out there, just make sure you get something with ATI's x1600 or NVidia's 7600.
Check out these and see what suites you best. Asus A8J, Sony VAIO [VGNFE28GP], Alienware Area-51® m5550, Ferrari 5000, Acer 8204. The list goes on and on.

HP nc8430 sounds like a good fit. You could opt for a 17" laptop with a Nvidia 7900 but I don't think you'll enjoy carrying it around + you won't get near 4 hours of battery life.

Re: Gaming laptop
There is always the LG, I forgot the model number, buts its right in your price range. But I do agree with the others. If you plan on carrying it to various places and don't need to 3D rendering for school courses projects or for other high graphic usage, 15.4 is good enough. I also recommend the nc8430.

I think the Compal HEL80, Asus Z96J, or HP nc8430 are good options for you. You can also take a look at the Alienware m5550 as mentioned.

You might want to consider the LG S1-M002A9. Flashy looking notebook that has quite a number of high end components and falls within your range. There are a few reviews on here for a better picture :)
