Question:
advice on new notebook
Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new computer soon... I'm a college student, so budget, size, and performance/speed are important factors. Any help would be great!
1) What is your budget?
- Preferably under $1000
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
- b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
- Basic MS Office operations (word, excel, powerpoint, access)
- Internet (email, web surfing)
- Listening to music
- Watching DVDs, though not frequently
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
- I don't travel much (except for breaks), but I don't usually just leave it on my desk... I carry it around a lot, to library and whatnot
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
- Not really, not a huge gamer
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
- Brands I've looked into:
* Toshiba, but apparently they have overheating issues?
* Lenovo, but don't know very much about this brand
* Apple/MacBook, but I've always been a PC user (even though I've heard of the new Windows-friendly version for Intel macs)
- Brands I don't prefer:
* Dell - I've had bad experiences, but I hear good things as well
* HP/Compaq
- Brands I'm impartial/unsure about:
* Lenovo
* Sony (attractive aesthetically, but pricey)
* Gateway
* Acer
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
- Last computer had horrible battery life, so anything over 3 hours is great for me...
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
- Not really, but prefer looking at it first
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
- U.S.
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
- 13" Wide - 14" Standard or Wide
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
- Widescreen
d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
- Glossy
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
- Not as important as the inside
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
- Buying within the next month or two... hopefully
- Lasting at least 3 years
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
- Prefer 80 GB (60 OK)
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
- DVD-CD/RW
Other preferences:
- Intel Core Duo Processor (Core 2 Duo would be great, but don't know if it's necessary for me)
- 1 GB of RAM
- Wireless capability is important
Thanks!

Re: advice on new notebook
HP dv2000 series would work well for you. I dont know why you have a problem with the HP brand, but Ive messed around with my friends' variosu HP notebooks and they seem to have quality about eqaul to my VAIO. in the case of the new dv2000 series, they are also reasonably nice looking as well.
With a Core Duo, 1GB/80GB, dvdrw, and wifi, they go for around $800 before taxes.
Otherwise, look at the Lenovo 3000 N100 from newegg, for around $900. It only ahs 512MB memory, but that can be upgraded relatively easily.
