development + desktop replacemente + work

Question:
development + desktop replacemente + work
i guys , i feel the need to open a new thread because i have not found a thread that fits my necesities ( my english is very poor... as you have already noted).
i would like to replace my desktop PC, so i will be needing big screen size, and the hability to run some multimedia ( dvd.. and all the beautifull but memory-hungry windows applications..) not particulary a gammer but.... ocasionally some game migth be in my life.
i will use it for development ( C++ , java... and all those beautifull things. :) ) but also i do support, so i will have to move the laptop around all the time... beacuse of this it would be nice to have a serial port ( many dont have) to go directly to the serial port of switches, routers , etc...( yo notice with this that it MUST BE A STRONG equipment, it can not be a delicate one, so i think that VAIO is out of the question ).
wireless is a "must have" option, bluethoot also.
the machine will be almost all the time on linux ... so , for example, if you know that it is dificult to get the soft to monitor the batery on debian, it would be good to know that.
i think that i have answered all the basic cuestions... if i dont... please let me know
if you can give some guidelines... like... dont this... do that... i will be very happy to ear them.
Thanks in advance...
PD: one more question.... wath is the name of those accesories where you plug your keyboard, monitor , power and mouse, and of course the laptop, so i can steel use my keyboard and monitor ???

I'd suggest looking at IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads since you want it so robust. You can get a decent GPU in those, and I believe some of the models ship with a serial port.
And the accessory you're talking about is a Docking Station, which is also available for almost all Thinkpads.

I'd look at the HP dv9000z series. It should be very 64-bit Linux friendly, outside of the Broadcom WiFi card that there are workarounds for, with its nVidia chipset and GPU. I'm not sure about durability though. See the Coupons sticky message in the HP forum here for a 15% off code for hp.com.
