Question:
[Malaysia] Asus Z96JP vs Dell Inspiron 6400
Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, but I've been constant reading the forum, till today my parents decided to upgrade my notebook.
I'm currently having an Acer Aspire 1682WLMi
Intel Pentium M 725 Processor (1.6ghz, 400Mhz, 2MB L2 Cache)
15.4" WXGA wide TFT LCD
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700/64MB
60GB HDD
DVD Dual (Support DVD+-RW)
512MB DDR
802.11b/g wireless LAN (Intel 2200BG chipset)
Right now the keyboard plastics that connect the keys kinda broke off, so I'm gonna buy one while I get the old laptop to be fixed (not sure how long is that gonna take)
I'm considering 2 laptops now, note that I am in Malaysia prices are in MYR (Ringgit Malaysia) and current conversion is USD1=RM3.7
ASUS (AERIS BRANDED) Z96JP
Intel Core Duo 1.66Ghz
512MB DDR2
80GB HDD/DVDRW Dual Layer
256MB ATI RADEON X1600
15.4" WXGA CSV LCD
3-IN-1 Card Reader
2.6KG Weight with webcam
No O/S
(RM 3,599/USD972 self-collect)
DELL INSPIRON 6400
Intel Pentium Core Duo 1.66Ghz,
512MB DD2,
80GB SATA HDD,
8x DVD +/-RW
15.4" WXGA Truelife Display
128MB ATI RADEON X1300
Integrated Stereo Sound
Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet
Intel PRO Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11 a/g
Internal 56k Modem
1 Express Cardslot
6 cell 53Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery
1 Year Next Businss Day onsite Response.
XP Home
(RM 3,299/USD 891 self collect)
Difference of both set are about RM 300 (USD 75), graphics card capability and O/S availability. Currently my parents are using the Dell Inspiron 6300. It is solid, but it sure is boring having another PC that looks exactly like it. How is ASUS's built quality, from all I know my friends had failing hard drives from it. I've only owned 2 Acer notebooks, played with other compaq, IBM and Toshiba notebooks, but never ASUS, any comments?

The Asus is much better built than the Dell, and also has a far faster video card. The Radeon X1600 is roughly twice as powerful as the X1400.
Between the two, there is little comparision - get the Asus. Here is our review:
Remember to check our Asus forum for more information about them.
Upgrading the RAM to at least 1GB would be a big help for overall performance.

The Asus is quite a bit better than the Dell.
The Radeon X1600 is roughly twice as powerful as the X1400.
And the Dell you're looking at has an x1300, so the difference in gaming power is slightly more than that.
Upgrading the RAM to at least 1GB would be a big help for overall performance.
Definitely upgrade beyond 512MB RAM.
