For 1k? The cheapest Macbook is right above your budget...and it's not all that great either (the entry level Macbook, that is).
I'd suggest a Dell e1505 with integrated graphics.

I suggest the HP dv2000t or the Compaq V3000T. The HP is a little more expensive but has some different options and design.
If you are going to take it to school, you may want to go with the 12 cell battery depending on how long you plan on using it. It sticks out from the bottom about an inch and adds about a pound to its weight, but gives you better battery life.
Also, be sure to read for information about discounts from HP. If you are eligable for the Academic Purchase Program it could save you about $100.

I second the dv2000t or the V3000t, it really all depends on what you value more. The style and features, or price. They really aren't that much different, and both of them will suit you very well, and do so very attractively. So you might take a look and see what you think.

the IBM T42 is a great 14 inch laptop for reliability it can't be beat. If you get it from compusa it comes with a 3 year warrenty standard. the Dell e1405 would probably sute you needs and would probably perform better with its dual core proc
