Re: Bang for the Buck Gaming Laptop
I've considered the Hel and HGL, but their 3DMarks are pretty low, and they would cost about $1250 with a few upgrades. For about $1400 I can get an Inspiron 1705 with a 7900 gs. However, 17" may be kinda big, so I'd prefer a notebook of smaller size if I can get one for closer to $1000. I'm also sceptical about the acer 5672 because I've heard of heat issues.

Re: Bang for the Buck Gaming Laptop
If you want less than a 17" notebook, the best you'll get is a X1600/7600 GPU. That HGL80 was a little underclocked though...my nc8430 gets around 3950 in 3dMark05, while the HGL got less than 3100.
If you're going to leave it on the desk most of the time, I would seriously suggest the e1705. 7900GS will carry you through for a while at really good settings, and it should be within your price range once you use Dell Coupons or the Outlet.

You could try the asus a8jm. which has a nvidia 7600 and it is a 14 inch screen. it has a core duo 1.83ghz computer. I perfonally have an hp computer with a geforce 7200 and that is plenty enough for me.

Don't be so focused on synthetic benchmark scores. The Compals peform very well in real-life gaming even without overclocking. But since you want the higher numbers, take a look at the Asus S96J. The Dell e1705 with go 7900 GS will give you some serious gaming power if you can get it under $1400.

This one is very nice with the 512MB go 7900 GTX, but I think it's more like $2000 if I remember correctly.

David,
I'm gonna do you (and everyone else) a favor and get you past these midrange (128-bit memory GPUs) to get the the true 17" LCD "Bang for the Buck" Gaming notebook with an nVidia Geforce 7800 Go GTX with 256mb dedicated.... for less than $1500
In this forum, it is widely known as Sager 5750... which is a Intel Core 2 Duo notebook with 17" widescreen and mid-range to high end video card options.
Specifications from Sager
Read a review for the 5760 notebook which is the same chassis but minor upgrades differences:
Review of Sager NP5760
Normally this model notebook only comes with an ATI X1600, but recently some OEMs have had a shortage of that videocard, and has given the upgrade option to get an Nvidia 7800 Go GTX... for a cheap additional $100-150.
Most of the OEMs have pulled that deal off of their sites, except for www.RJtech.com. RJtech is one of the only sites out there that actually sells barebones of custom notebooks from Asus, Compal, MSI, Clevo, etc. They also will custom configure it like every other notebook site. And has excellent ratings @ resellerratings.com
:D Check these specs of a Clevo M570U-A (A.K.A Sager 5750)
Display: 17" WXGA (1440x900) with Super Clear Glossy Surface
Video Card: nVidia 7800GTX 256MB dedicated

WLAN: Intel 3945ABG Wireless Module

Carry Bag: Included
TV Tuner: None
Warranty: 1 Year
:D Total: $1,499.00 :D
RJtech link for this Clevo M750U-A
$1500.... Not bad for a notebook that can crank a :) 3DMark06 score of 4000 (at stock!!!) :). None of the notebooks that were recommended here DO NOT even come close.
You can upgrade and downgrade whatever you want, which can make the price better depending on what you want.
But this is the BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK (for 17" LCD notebooks).
Game On People,
-Gophn
P.S. This is the notebook config that I was thinking to get for my girlfriend, she games (Oblivion, BFME2, etc.) and I cant let her roll with a mid-range GPU.
