Question:
800mhz worth the wait?
I keep reading articles about the new santa rosa platform with its increased FSB. I am couple weeks away from ordering a loaded 5760 and was wondering if there is a reason why I should wait for the chip. I know if I wait for all the new computer stuff to be released I will never buy a new one because of the technology turnover but I am just concerned about making a large investment into a notebook only to learn that a few months away it is grossly outdated. I am anxious to drop the hammer on the notebook and this was just one item that I keep reading about. Any thoughts about the speed difference between 667mhz and 800mhz?

as obvious as this sounds, it's true:
If you need a computer now, buy it. If you can wait, wait.
Technology always gets better and cheaper.

I'm also somewhat in a dilemma over this. Are there any real world tests that in fact show tangible speed/efficiency advantage of the santa rosa over napa?

It really depends on what you are doing. Internet and Office ain't going to be any faster on Santa Rosa.

If you're that worried, but need a new laptop now you can do what I am.
I need a laptop for school now, so I'm buying an inexpensive one ( HP nx7400 refurb for $800). I will buy a new, expensive one when several emerging technologies are finally mainstream.
What I want will be
LED Backlight
Santa Rosa and/or hybrid or solid state HD
hd-dvd or blu-ray or combo drive (if this whole thing ever actually takes off)
wireless usb or whatever wireless standard becomes prevailent
802.11n final draft
In the meantime, I'll have a fairly decent computer and have more money in my pocket.

It's funny, but when all those things are mainstream, the next big thing will be just around the corner. A 700MHz PIII can do typical notebook tasks like Office, internet or burning discs quite nicely.

Re: 800mhz worth the wait?
The next platform after Santa Rosa is supposed to be 1066MHz FSB. Unless you don't need the system for a few more months or longer (since a Santa Rosa version of the NP5760 will need to be reworked/released first), go ahead and get it now.

True, that why I have no problem getting the nx7400 now. My point is that that things I listed are pretty signifigant changes from what is available now. The battery life savings of Santa Rosa combines with LED Backlighting could be very good, and LED is going to make the displays brighter and more accurate.
