Consider the Dell Inspiron E1505. It seems best suited to your needs.

Re: Gaming Laptop at a reasonable price?
Are you certain your friend wants a very high resolution screen? I'm not sure WUXGA + Glossy in a 15.4" exists.
The closest thing to your requirements is probably the Asus Z96J with a WSXGA+ resolution glossy screen notebook which is suppose to be available in July. It has a X1600 which is quite a bit faster than the X1400 available in the Dell e1505.
Options available now are:
Compal HEL80 - WSXGA+ non-glossy screen notebook with a 7600go (also quite a bit faster than the X1400).
Dell Latitude D820 - WUXGA non-glossy screen available with the Nvidia NVS 120m (go7400 based). About the same performance as a Radeon X1400. Business class notebook, this is probably the most durable of all the notebooks listed. If you really want the notebook to last 5 years this is probably your best bet.

The HP NC8430 may be a good choice for you. It has everything you want except for the screen resolution. I'm not sure you can find that screen resolution in a 15.4", atleast not at that price. Check this out:

Good luck!

Re: Gaming Laptop at a reasonable price?
I'd suggest either the Compal HEL80 (PowerNotebooks.com has it as the PowerPro L 8:15) or the HP nc8430. The latter is more expensive.
