12" screen - 14" screen
If 14 inch, I want it to be a widescreen.

Take with.. I want it to be small

As much as possible. I want to be able to watch an xvid movie or two.

nope.

Sweden or in worst case, the US.

Sony SZ is 13.3" and can last around 6hrs on battery power.

The ThinkPad x60 should go about eight hours with the larger battery and low voltage Core Duo. You will need an external optical drive.

The SZ starts at about 1400 acording to Sony Style. I would poke around there, your demands are not high so you should be able to find one for under 1700. I would also look to see which Asus notebooks are available in Sweden. They seem to have alot of notebooks that fit into that size.

If you want a long battery, go for the sony sz. You can get a decently spec'd SZ for <$1500.
Here are the battery lives for the following notebooks, as reported on the forums:
Sony SZ: 4-6 hours
ASUS w7j: ~3hours
ASUS w3j, a8: ~3:30-4 hours
The Fujitsu SI 1520 is reported to have ~3 hours (from notebook.de). You should also make sure 12.1" wxga is big enough before you buy one. They are a lot smaller than 13.3" or 14". I think fujitsu's should have similar build quality as sony or asus.

Dell Inspiron 1405 or Latitude D620 have decent battery life, esp with the 9 cell. Latitude does allow you to have a 6 or 9 cell + a 6 cell modular battery that would replace the optical when you travel.
