Question:
Do I actually need a new laptop??
Hey, I've been looking at getting a new laptop for quite a while now, but I just took some time the really think about it. I bought an IBM A22m last year off eBay for 300cdn. That 300 dollar laptop so far has done everything I've needed it to. Xp Pro, word processing, spreadsheets, starcraft warcraft 3, AutoCAD 2005, Minitab, basic Photoshop, and boots in under 1 minute.....and it never really slows down unless I am trying to do 3+ things at once. I just realized that this 300 dollar laptop does almost everything I need. All that’s left for a new one is a decent battery (mine lasts like <1min), wireless, dvdrw, and a more powerful gpu. Does anyone think I really need a new laptop?? .....haha..... I guess I just want a new laptop....

if you don't like the battery just buy a new one which would cost a lot less than a new laptop. there sounds like there is nother wrong or too outdated in it.
unless you want to go get an new one... :)

I guess I don't exaclty need a new laptop. After have looking at new laptops; the gap between mine and newer models, spec wise, is quite large. This has led me to the question; does anyone in fact actually need today's technology to run today's software? This laptop seems to do everything but current gaming and was released 5 years ago.

For the most part, no. Unless you game a lot, or have a ton of programs running concurrently, most computer users will be just fine with whatever computer they have.
Sure you won't be really able to use VISTA when it arrives, but I don't think that's your concern.

With your requirements, I think you can settle for a commodore 64:) But seriously, I suggest you get something new with Vista around the corner and more demanding games.

My requirements are everything short of current top of the line games. I use AutoCad on a daily basis for engineering classes, and my trusty old laptop runs smoothly (with nothing else in the background).
I was just wondering why anyone goes out and gets a brand new laptop when a piece of 5 year old technology will suit anyone lower then an avid gamer. (assuming most ppl are using a comp for my purposes or less).

New technology is always alluring. It seems to me you "want" a new laptop more than you "need" one.
Since the one you have is working for you, you may want to wait until next year for Vista SP1, Merom, Santa Rosa, and DX10 before buying a new laptop.

I have a 1997 Toshiba Satellite 2065CDS. AMD K6 300Mhz processor, 128MB RAM, 4GB hard-drive, 24 teac cd-rom, modem... It actually outperforms my P4 3 GHZ, 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200RPM desktop computer...amazign :)
