everyday programs, ENGINEERING, and some gaming. WHAT LAPTOP?

Question:
everyday programs, ENGINEERING, and some gaming. WHAT LAPTOP?
did i get your attention now...
on to the Q&A...
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
-$1500 to $1600 CDN
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
-I REALLY want at least 17". But 15.4" is okay, I guess. As long as I'm happy with its specs.

a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

-I didn't see this right away. So I pick (d). Desktop replacement... at least 17".
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
-downloading... so it'll be on quite a lot. i'd use it a lot for movie watching. and some engineering programs... i don't use em a lot now. but i probably will starting in a few months. so AUTOCAD, ANSYS, etc... those kinda programs.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
-i don't plan to bring it out. it'd mostly be just around my room a lot... desk..bed... floor. sometimes around the house. but i do plan to bring it with me if i go somewhere far... maybe a long drive. or going to a different country. so the airport... on the plane. my only plans right now is to go somewhere next summer. so i might bring it then... that'll be a 12-hr plane ride.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
-i haven't been a gamer in yrs. so i'm so clueless about what games are out there. i've heard of COUNTER STRIKE and HALF-LIFE. i couldn't play really b/c my comp couldn't handle it. so i want one so i could start playing those. So SHOOTING GAMES...FPS, it's called I think. I also love SPORTS games. So I'll be playing a lot of EA SPORTS too... nba live, fifa, nhl... etc...
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
-NOTHING FROM MDG!!!!! i want a legit brand. a pretty well-known company. someone trustworthy. i don't want any ****ty brands.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
-i plan to use the adapter most of the time. but if i go on a plane... i'd want something pretty decent... unless planes allow laptops to be plugged in:confused: ... but overall, i won't use it much or any at all... unless i go somewhere really far.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
-i'm pretty hesitant about this, but i've been checking out DELL. if it's really good, i'm willing to do it.
9) What country are you buying this in?
-Canada
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
-Widescreen
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
-right now i'm on a 17" Samsing SyncMaster753 running on 1152 by 864 pixels. so something like that... not too small. not too big.
Standard
a. XGA -1024x768 - Large and easy to read text + graphics icons, but you fit less stuff on the screen.
b. SXGA - 1400x1050 - Compromise resolution between XGA and UXGA.
c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen.
Widescreen
d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

-i want something good for movies, some gaming, and all the other stuff i said above.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
-i just breezed through that thread. i'll make sure to check out the difference for myself. but if glossy is the latest. it must be better.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
-not really. doesn't have to be fricken hot, but as long as it's not an ugly duckling. i just want it to be strong, rigid, and sturdy.
14) How long do you want this laptop to last?
-i want it to last for yrs. my comp just broke. got that 4 something yrs ago. so maybe another 4 yrs or so.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
-i know laptops can't be that high. so i'll be fine with 100GB to 120GB. i have a 160GB harddrive i bought last summer for my old comp. i'd probably use that as an external.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
-so that's what optical drives are. i want a pretty good burner. i just bought a new dvd burner for my old comp...LG 16x. so i'd want something pretty similar. i'm not sure if laptops have 16x burners. so less...8x, is it? is fine i suppose.
==========
i hope you guys can help me. i played around with my old comp and eventually killed it, literally. i wasn't planning on buying a new comp at this time, but i'm gonna need it when school starts. (it's my last yr.) my plan was to buy a new system once WINDOWS VISTA was out, but it seems like i won't be able to do that. so if it's a VISTA CAPABLE system... that's be f****** great!
i've been looking at DELL.CA. i've checked out their INSPIRON 6400 and 9400. you guys asked about my SCREEN PREFERENCE. i think both systems are XGA default. i dunno if that's good enough for what i'd use it for. they were charging a 100 to 150 more for SXGA with TrueLife.
also... the graphics card.
--for the 6400:
128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 HyperMemory™ [Included in Price]
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™ [add $50 or $2/month1]
--the 9400:
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory [Included in Price]
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS [add $340 or $9/month1]
i've heard about dedicated and intergrated cards. i believe this are all dedicated, correct? which should be sufficient enough for me?
also could someone explain the TV TUNER for me? i'm just curious about that.
is it just for watching TV on your comp? i already have a TV in my room. so no pt in getting it?

Mayb u should sort out the answers for the question, it seems a bit messy and most ppl will not read when it's so... hmm complicated. Make ur answer simpler. BTW, someone mention the dv8000t in ur last post. It's quite a deal also, except that the dv8000t only had a 7600go, it styling(for me personally) is better than dells. But with a 7600 u could play most games, but dun expect high quality on everyone of them.
Oh, convert the canadian dollar into usd(if there is any difference, sorry i live in europe)

Yes take the E1705 , its the best value for money and exactly what you need .
Configured with 7900GS for gaming , 2GHZ for intensive cpu tasks , 512MB ( get 2GB when you can ) and default 60GB ( transplant a 7k100 later ) + a good 750$ coupon should be in your budget .
Its also great for porn ... LOL .

The title has been edited. It may have been a joke, but please don't post that. This is a clean site.

Re: everyday programs, ENGINEERING, and some gaming. WHAT LAPTOP?
actually it wasn't a joke. i was just being more honest.
i read that the e1705 is pretty similar to the 9400 and the e1505 to the 6400. it seems as if the US line carries the "e" while us canadians get the "#" series.
i'm at work right now. so i can't browse around too much. i'll check out if they both offer the same upgrades. and see which is a better buy.
i just thought of a thing about buying the comp US. wouldn't this mean higher s+h?? in the $100+ area or more?
also anyone here know MDG?!? it's a canadian place that sells comp. is DELL kinda like MDG?
