browsing for a smaller notebook this time

Question:
browsing for a smaller notebook this time
Looking for something more portable than my D610 now. Im not really in a hurry to buy, just browsing and seeing whats out there since i only really know of Dell and Apple.
1) What is your budget?
-$1000.00 would really prefer it to be around $700 though
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
- 12”-13” Widescreen would be ideal. Definitely nothing more than 13”
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
- no games really. Nothing too intensive. Word, excel, internet, movies…some bookkeeping/accounting stuff…
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
- needs to be light so I can carry it around
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
- not really…maybe some older games like SimCity and such
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
- looking at apple alot lately. (some more notes below)
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
- the longer the better. Maybe 2-3 hrs? it would be cool if they had a small ac adapters
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
-Yes and no. Not from ebay, bu maybe from apple or dell or ibm or something to that extent
9) What country are you buying this in?
- US
Screen Specifics
10/11) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
-Widescreen with the highest resolution available. Well on a 12” I guess 1440x900 is fine.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Doesn’t really matter.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
- atleast 40GB with 512 RAM
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
-just a DVD-CD/RW is fine. Don’t need to burn DVDs
Additional Info
Im not really looking for something super fast. In fact I don’t even care for the new Core Duo that has been out. I just don’t want a desktop processor. Pentium M is fine or PowerPC if I go the Mac route. A dedicated graphics card would be nice although not really a requirement.
I have heard that Dell is suppose to come out with a new D420 that seems to fit my requirements but I am kinda hesitant about buying Dell again. Haven’t entirely ruled it out yet.
I was also looking at the new Macbooks but they all seem to have that common problem of overheating so I will probably stay away from them. However, the last few weeks I have been going back and forth between the 12” iBook and 12” Powerbook. I really like the Powerbook but cant justify a reason to get it over the iBook.
I like Sony and IBM also but don’t really know what notebook they have to offer as I don’t know anything about their lineup. Plus I think they are out of my price range?

Apple books are rather heavy for their size. Moreover, given the light applications you say you will use the notebook for, it is better to concentrate on a notebook using ULV processors. They are much lighter. With some good luck and patience of waiting and checking you could get 1,1kg light 12" Dell Latitude X1 at the Dell outlet shop for slightly more than 1000$ (I remember there were even offers for 900$ there).

Re: browsing for a smaller notebook this time
If you can wait for a deal, you might be able to get the Dell XPS M1210 down to under $1k. Most likely 1-2 months before it gets that low.

Re: browsing for a smaller notebook this time
Do u normally use windows or MacOSX. If u use windows, the onli machine apple that can run windows better is the current intel line. Whether u get a overheatin macbook or not, it all depends on ur luck. But they hav quite some problems that u ll want to stay away, like the newly found stain problem. Hav u look at companies like MSI, Averatec and so? They offer mostly small laptops, and the price is good. Get a AMD proc oso, their cheaper.
