If you have dark tinted windows I'd go glossy. In addition to that, you may want tinted windows regardless of your choise because sunlight and laptop screen don't go together well.

Deffinitely matte. even with tinted windows you will have trouble with glare. Plus since you will have virtually zero control of where the sun is in relation to the screen. Matte all the way unless you will be driving at only at night.

This may be a little bit offtopic but how exactly do those navigation systems using laptops work? Do you have to subscribe to a cellular internet service like ev-do? What programs do you use?

I would definetly agree on your choice to go with a laptop as GPS' are very expensive.
Another question of my own though. There's no monthly fee or anything like that for a GPS program? You just plug in the USB and go? This seems like it would be really handy.

I agree. Tinted windows WILL keep the glare to a minimum. How do I know? I HAVE tinted Windows and a glossy notebook. Really, glossy is a great feature IMO. All of my future notebooks will have glossy screens.
It's really a matter of personal preference. You can tilt the screen and position the notebook in such a way that there isn't much glare at all.... or you could put a "roof" over it to block the sun.
