Question:
Gma950 -> My Needs -> X1600/7600
Are there any good notebooks that have a videocard that's between a GMA950 and a x1600/7600?
I'm considering buying a S96j, but I realized that I probably don't need that much out of my GPU but I do want some type of dedicated graphics. I just wanted to know my options before going ahead and ordering the s96j. Thanks in advance
and i'm not really interested in Dells

If you could complete the FAQ, that would be very helpful.
There are a lot of GPUs between the GMA950 and the X1600, but which one you need depends on what you will be doing with the machine as RogueMonk said.

General Questions
1) What is your budget?
No more than $1500 with at least 2 yr warranty. I would really prefer to keep it in the $1100-1300 range though
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
14.1" or 15.4" are both fine. I can't deal with 13.3"
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? I'll be surfing web, Microsoft applications, instant messenger, some programming, dvd burning (alot), games
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? Yeah i'll be taking it to and from school. I had a 15.4" before and I didn't have too much problem carrying it
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
I haven't really been into games for a while....but I would like the option. FFXI and Starcraft are games I play now
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I don't really like the Dell Inspirions. I'm actually typing on one now. it's ok...just feels cheap. I would like to buy from a Dell/Sony/HP. Something I can buy in a electronics store i guess.
I don't know about Asus either. If something were to happen to it who would I send it to? How long would it take to get it repaired and sent back to me? I've just read bad things about the support.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
3hrs is good
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
No not really. But if i could that would be nice
9) What country are you buying this in?
USA
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Wide (but i'm not too picky)
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Standard
a. XGA -1024x768 - Large and easy to read text + graphics icons, but you fit less stuff on the screen.
Widescreen
d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
glossy
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
yes!
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
at least 3 years
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
at least 80gb (100 would be better)
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive? I don't need a DVD burner but it would be nice, but a DVD-CD/RW is minimum
I would also like bluetooth, web cam (not deal breaker though), and maybe 4 usb ports (also not deal breaker).

The HP dv5000t would be a good option for the mainstream. Good keyboard and a nice screen, I advise seeing it in person at Best Buy.
If you are willing to go non-mainstream, an even better option is the Compal HEL80:

Comes standard with a 3-yr wty. Has a webcam and optional internal bluetooth.

Well after configuring the dv5000t it came out to be the same price as buying a S96j or HEL80.
I was considering buying from www.powernotebooks.com. Can anyone tell me how their service is?

I have only heard good things about PowerNotebooks. They have a lifetime reseller rating or 9.99 from over 1,000 reviews. That's what really caught my eye. If everything goes right, I will make my next laptop purchase there.
