Question:
Athlon DTR stuck at 800MHz even with AC - Plz Help
Hi - I know this is a known problem with XP and AMD with the battery, but I'm having the problem even on AC. The powernow tab is missing and I tried everything except an overclocking program which I don't want to use yet.
I have the Athlon 3700+ DTR with XP Home and have tried the following:
1) Updated to latest AMD Driver - AMDk8.sys
2) Tried power settings at always on and home/office
3) Ran mobilemeter in the background to make sure the clock speed is actually limited and it never got above 833MHz.
4) Used Superpi to up the CPU usage. It always got about 4 minutes for 2M which is consistent with a speed of 800MHz - see the cpu speed thread.
5) Tried loading powernow driver from AMD with compatability set for win2000. Drivers appeared to load - no powernow service listed, no powernow tab appeared.
6) Tried loading the powernow dashboard and got 2 errors:
a) This computer has powernow hardware but no software.
b) No PSS or PST (no idea how to install these or what they are)
Again, the computer is stuck even while plugged in! This is very frustrating. I have a Mitac 8355 with BIOS version 3.06 which appears to be the latest driver from Mitac.
Any ideas?
Thanks

The only thing I can think of is if you tried to optimize your notebook by getting rid of services or programs that you thought you did not need and in fact one of them is needed for this. Or same thing if you did a clean install of the OS after getting the notebook and did not install a service or program needed. The other possibility is that the OS/registry has been corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. If you decide to try reinstalling the OS, 1st do a full backup of the drive to another drive or DVD, that way if the fresh insatll does not fix it you can go back. Have you tried calling the manufacturer, this might be a common problem? The powernow tab being missing is a sure sign that some of the software or a service is not being started. Did the notebook ever work at it's correct speed?

Thanks for the replies.
Rightmark, speedswitch and clockgen would be last resort options - I'm worried they might say using them voided the warranty. With the amount I paid for the laptop it should really work correctly...
I didn't have the chance to optimize anything really except the store I bought it from did do some optimization for me. I didn't try a complete reinstall though and yes it has been stuck from day 1. Since my post I've contacted my customer support and it's being sent back so we'll see what they do with it. They're hopefully going to put the correct video card in it since they put the 9600 instead of the 9700 and the wireless card was missing.
Thank you again for your replies and I'll post an update when I find out what happens.
