Question:
Compaq or Toshiba - from Currys UK
Hi, guys, can you help me choose between these two laptops. My most important use is for Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. So i want the one that will offer the best performance. Also important is a quality screen (for graphics work) and solid build quality, (also i dont want it to malfunction through dodgy AMD/Compaq/Toshiba software etc).
I have ordered the Toshiba, but i can cancel and get the Compaq if it is better. The reason i ordered the Toshiba is because my intially thoughts was that it would have better build quality (i cant afford the time for it to go bust), and maby the processor is better (but im not so sure on this).

I guess the main performance is from the processor, how do they stack up against one another? Which would perform better for my needs?
The Compaq has the better Graphics card, faster Ram, bigger Hard Drive, 64bit processor and looks much nicer (personal taste).
The Toshiba has more ports eg USB, Firewire, Intel Core Duo, better build reliability (from what i hear), lighter and longer battery life.
Any opinions on which one i should go for? Both would cost me the exact same. I need performance and reliability most.

The Compaq is better built than the Toshiba, IMHO. I would go for the Toshiba. Filling the FAQ will help.

I would say go for the Compaq. Generally it is better built and has a slightly larger hard disk. The specification is very comparable to the Toshiba. But the price difference is quite a lot. Save £100, and go for the Compaq.

No, price is the exact same. I ordered the Toshiba yestoday, when they were both £499. But the Toshiba went up to £599 this morning, they already charged but they have to sell to me at the original price.
jetstar - Why do you prefer the Toshiba over?
So which processor is better the AMD or the Intel Core Duo?, it looks like that is what it is down to. The intel also has the 2mb cache whils the Tx64 has 2x256k. Is this anything to get concerned about?

Generally speaking, Intel Core Duo processors are better than the AMD Turion X2. However, the Core Duo has a smaller bus, and also a slightly lowered clockspeed, to what it normally is. Having said that, the Core Duo may perform ever so slightly faster than the AMD, but its near enough no difference. If you just surf the Internet and type a bit on a word processer, then both will be the same.

Looks like i will have to keep the Toshiba, even though i was swaying slightly to the Compaq now, but it is too late, the Compaq is out of stock. The Toshiba has been posted and should arrive Monday. Not bad for £405 GBP.
