depends on screen size but the higher the res, the better. 1280x800 is okay for a 12" screen but would want higher for a bigger screen

You could look at either the Asus G1 (15.4) or Asus A8Js (14.1). Both have excellent specifications.

The Core 2 Duo T7200 (2 Ghz) is more than enough for anything and it's reasonably priced while the higher models are usually ridiculously overpriced. In that secenario, getting either the T7400 or T7600 would be just waste of money in my opinion.
If i were you, i would do so (G1/A8js).
Or else, i would wait for DX10 if you're a really serious gamer.
